We had the good fortune of connecting with Chenedra Gladness and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chenedra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Well funny enough, I honestly fought the idea of starting my own business until I couldn’t fight it anymore. Every job that I have ever worked has seemed to push me towards leadership roles, but the idea of actually being in charge and being “the boss” seemed intimidating. My client base then and even now primarily consists of entrepreneurs and corporate business women. I think what really encouraged me to take the leap into starting my business was the relationships already established between my clients and me.They  often spoke on the difficulties of wanting to include self care into their routines but the lack of flexibility that came with doing so. The business idea was formed from there. I wanted to provide them with business hours that were more flexible and services that tended to their specific needs and just keeps growing each time I come to a new level of thinking and want to provide a better service.  Thanks to my clients, I decided to take that leap into entrepreneurship nearly 2 years ago and never looked back.

How do you think about risk? What role has taking risk played in your life/career?
“Risk” has been the starting point to every amazing thing that has happened in my life. The decision to move to Birmingham, AL to start esthetics school with no money and no job was a risk. Moving to Atlanta after school with no job and only enough money to pay a month’s worth of bills was a risk. In 2019, quitting my job to become a full-time business owner was a risk. I can’t think of a single time that I have literally stepped out in faith and later regret it. Every risk that I have taken has made me a more confident and stronger person. Nothing worth having comes without risk, right?

Please tell us more about your business. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today business-wise. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I would say the main thing that sets Essence of She Day Spa apart from others is the fact that it provides pampering services in an spa environment and has the option of providing them in the comfort of your own home as well. There’s a flexibility and convenience factor that a lot of other places don’t provide. The biggest thing that I’ve most proud of is the fact that I stepped out on faith. I started small by operating only mobile for a while but I opened the spa location in February of this year. Covid-19 shut everything down in March but I’ve still managed to keep going and growing. This year has definitely been something but I can’t wait to see the progress made a year from now and years to come.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First things first we’re going to eat! I’d write out a list of my favorite places like slutty vegan,Tassilis Raw Reality,Plant based Pizzeria,Ms icey’s kitchen & bar, Sugar factory, and let them decide the meals each day. I’m sure they’d want to shop so every mall would be visited followed by drinks and fun at the skyline park on the rooftop of ponce city market. The rest of the week would then include peidmont park,Stone Mountain, drinks on Auburn avenue or Edgewood. The visit wouldnt be complete without taking them to jeju sauna spa. The body scrubs there make you feel like a brand new person and it’s the cherry on top to an amazing week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Hmm,I wouldn’t say there is one thing or person. My shoutout is to every person, boss, situation, up and down that I’ve experienced in my life thus far. Without going through it all there would definitely be a different story being played out.
