Meet Chelsea Mason | Crafter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Mason and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea, what do you attribute your success to?
By far the greatest factor behind my success has been community support. I started my craft business right at the beginning of a pandemic and honestly didn’t really know anything other than knowing I loved to craft. My family and greater community jumped right after my first post, and they haven’t let up since. The first thing that I sold was a t-shirt, and I thought I would maybe sell 10… I was wrong I sold over 50. Every single t-shirt I sold was bought by a family member, friend or friend of a friend who heard about me through them. Even now, when I am a year into this small business, my community continues to spread the word about me and my business.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart from other creators is that I have never actually called myself a creator. Of course I am always crafting, painting or drawing but I have never thought about the word creator itself, rather I have called myself a maker. I make things, and up until last year, I made them for myself. Over time I have been more encouraged to don the title “creator” based on feedback from others, but it is still growing on me. I think this is a testament to my journey. I have never been more proud of my work, than I am now. Most people have never seen any of my drawings, or paintings, because I never thought they were good enough to be seen by others. Can you say “imposter syndrome”… Now I proudly post everything I create and don’t wait. I owe my community for helping me get to that point. The foundation of my craft business is creation, and everyday I am inspired by other artists and creatives to think outside the box and bend straight lines. I am always looking around, following and talking to other crafters and creators to come up with new ideas and also talk about successes and failures.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was in town, I would definitely take them around to show them the city. My go to places for eating are: Bartaco, which has the best guacamole and plantains, and BlossomTree which a hidden gem and has amazing sweet potatoes and kimchi rice. Also the Atlanta Beltline has so much to offer, especially Guac y Margys for the most refreshing margaritas. On the outskirts of the city I would take my friends to Rumi’s Kitchen for really good Persian food or Eclipse di Luna for tapas and music. For a fun time, I would take my friends to the rooftop at Ponce City market, the Battery, New Realm Brewing. I also love to take friends to Cru Wine Bar or Torched Hop Brewing Co for cool wine and beer tastings.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout out to all the essential workers who have still not stopped pushing to keep all of us safe. Also all the essential workers who are not actually labeled “essential workers” who did not stop working. During the pandemic we have all seen sleepless nights, mental health crisis, breakdowns, and at least for me a struggle to stay happy and find joy in my routine. This is where I found and built my business.
