We had the good fortune of connecting with Chef Kels and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chef, what is the most important factor behind your success?
When having a brand it can sometimes be overwhelming from the beginning. The key to keeping things together would be to stay focused, and always make sure you are your number one fan. The important factors in my brand is quality and presentation. It is very important to me that the quality is top tier, because when I’m the customer the visuals, marketing, and quality of the product is what makes me interested.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For a long a time I wondered how could I bring my many talents together. I’ve always loved to cook, do graphics , and entertain. One day it came to me, and I decided to bring everything together. People love my flavorful and unique meals from the BussDown chicken sandwiches to my lamb chops. My sauce, known as BussDownSauce, is extremely popular, which is America’s new favorite sauce. The challenges I faced when bringing my brand to the light, was that I wanted to be accessible to everybody, and there was no way I could make that happened. Therefore, I decided to come out with sauces and seasonings, so I could be in everybody’s kitchen some type of way. The lessons I’ve learned would be to don’t sell yourself short. I put a lot of work and thought in what I do, which reflects the price. I was once selling myself short, but now I know my worth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First thing first , Atlanta is the place to be. I love food, so that would be something I would invest my time doing with a friend. The first stop would be Negril Village for some of that good ol’ curry goat then end it with one of my favorite wing places , JR Crickets. I would also take them to fun places like Spin Art or the Painted Duck. Ponce city market is also a place to show around, with the belt line, shopping, and food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s a lot of people that motivate me to keep going, but first a foremost I would like to ShoutOut God. Without God, nothing would be possible. He gives me the motivation and strength to keep on keeping. Secondly. I would like to give a shout-out to my mother. She is one of my top inspirations when I’m in my kitchen. With her soul food cooking, it allowed me to gain interest. She also is one of the people that has encouraged me to keep doing what I love. Watching her cook with passion growing up is the reason in my kitchen I treat every meal like it’s my child. Lastly, motivation from my fiancé and the mother of my kids means a lot. She has been a closely support person in my business. It’s always important to have your love one by your side. It makes you stronger and keeps you uplifted.
