We had the good fortune of connecting with Chay Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chay, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The Create Spot, LLC. started from my passion for crafting. As I sat and zoned in on what I was doing, I would get tickled seeing the different stages to completion. I would be intrigued with how I could take various supplies and produce an amazing item. One day I was making myself a T-shirt, and I remembered my dad saying, “Entrepreneurship is the way to go.” It took me about a year of doing research and testing to perfect the quality of the items I wished to offer. I wanted my business to be “The Spot” where an idea came to life!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I pride myself in treating my clients the way I would like to be treated if the tables were turned. I am very attentive, and try to go above and beyond. Whether it be a color, or a particular item, I will do my research to finds the color, or item that my customers desire. I can’t do the “take whatever I give you” mentality, They are paying money for their items and should get what they want.

Owning a business is definitely not easy. To overcome challenges, I step back, take a break and regroup. Sometimes that’s we need, because then we realize it really wasn’t a challenge. Other times, I may bounce ideas off of someone else.

Two lessons I have learned along the way…1. Never say no if you are asked, “Can you do this?”. Someone said to me once, if you say no, you may lose out on a learning opportunity. Say, “Let me get back to you”, do your research in order to determine if you can, or you truly can’t. 2. You can’t handle every order that comes it, so don’t try. Be wise, It’s better to pace yourself instead of presenting subpar products to your customers.

The Create Spot is a small, woman owned business that enjoys creating custom items! We have grown since conception, so if you ask what we have to offer, my response now is, “Tell me what your vision is.” I work hard to present my customers with their order in a decent turn-around time. I know I don’t like waiting more than 2 weeks for product so I try to avoid such situations. I am also about communicating each step of the way. I feel customer’s should know the status of their order they are paying money for.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I have to shout out my family. They were my testers who received many packages of items to test and critique…and they sure did. Secondly, I have to shout out my best friends, Aaron and Jess whose support has been incredible along the way! Lastly, I have to shout out two of my customers that have been riding with me from the beginning! Keisha and Tracey not only pushes my creativity to the next level, but continuously encourages and supports me on this path of being a successful business owner.
