We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlene Peeples and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi CHARLENE, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting Yonah Yoga was mainly driven by my own deep passion for yoga and the desire to share its transformative benefits with my community. I recognized a need for a dedicated space where people could come together to explore yoga’s rewards in a supportive community. My vision includes creating an inclusive and welcoming environment, where people off all walks of life feel comfortable. Building this community has allowed me to connect with others in a meaningful way, while also growing personally and professionally. Running Yonah Yoga continues to be a fulfilling journey, and I look forward to keep growing the studio, exploring new collaborations, and enhancing our offerings to continue making a positive impact in people’s lives.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Yonah Yoga began as a grassroots business, built on little more than resilience, faith, and a passion for yoga. After leaving a difficult business partnership that left me financially and emotionally drained, I used the principles and practices of yoga to rebuild myself, both professionally and internally. I didn’t come from an easy background, so I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come, allowing my deep pain to fuel my growth. Rather than letting my struggles break me down, I used them as a foundation to build myself up.
It wasn’t easy; I faced countless mental and emotional hurdles. But with the support of an amazing community, perseverance, and a commitment to the process, I was able to reach where I am today. Through it all, I’ve learned invaluable lessons: leaning on community is a strength, not a weakness, and in life, we have choices—including where we focus our energy. Success looks different for everyone, and I’ve learned to trust that the universe supports my journey and to continue trusting in the Tao, or ‘the way.’
At Yonah Yoga, inclusivity is at the heart of our mission. All are welcome, and everyone has a place here. I’m especially passionate about teaching people who think yoga isn’t for them, because yoga isn’t just about doing poses—it’s about being yoga. We honor the full spectrum of yoga’s teachings, embracing all eight limbs of yoga, not just the popular asanas (postures). My hope is that Yonah Yoga continues to be a welcoming sanctuary where everyone can feel valued and supported in their journey.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Sautee Nacoochee is a hidden gem nestled in the Northeast Georgia mountains, surrounded by stunning nature and rich in charm. If I were to show someone around, we’d start with an energizing or relaxing class at Yonah Yoga, setting the tone for an amazing day or unwinding in the evening. Just steps away is Sweetwater Coffeehouse, a cozy locals spot with fair-trade and organic coffee and a warm, inviting atmosphere. For dining, we’d head to the new Campfire. Gather Round restaurant, known for its superb dishes, or Harvest Habersham, a fantastic farm-to-table restaurant that celebrates local flavors.
A visit to Elohee Retreat Center is a must for anyone seeking rest and rejuvenation; it’s a serene haven in the valley, perfect for a weekend getaway. For a unique twist, we’d venture to Tallulah 1882, a delightful spot with a witchy cottagecore vibe, where we can savor delicious pastries, signature teas, and coffee in a cozy, nostalgic space.
And of course, no trip to Sautee Nacoochee would be complete without hiking Yonah Mountain! The trail rewards hikers with breathtaking views, and on clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of Atlanta’s skyline. With its natural beauty, amazing food, and inviting spots to relax and connect, Sautee Nacoochee is truly a memorable destination.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to a few pivotal figures who have profoundly shaped my journey. First, to Walker, a mentor and dear friend who has since left this earthly realm. His guidance brought me to a better way of living, and his influence remains a cornerstone of who I am today. For that, I am forever grateful. As a person in recovery, I wouldn’t be where I am at today without the wisdom and love that I received from my recovery family. Ram Dass has also been a cherished teacher, continuously teaching me how to be here now, to love, to serve, and to remember. Finally, to my yoga mentor and teacher Akasha, who continues to guide me not only in my yoga practice but also in balancing the many layers of being a teacher, a business owner, and simply a human. Their wisdom and support are woven into every step of my path, and I am deeply thankful for each of them.
