We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlece Bishop and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charlece, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
To be frank, I never thought I would own my own business…EVER. I had dreams and aspirations to climb the ladder, beat the odds, and dispose of the misconception of the black woman in the workforce. However, things slowly changed when I actually entered working in corporate America. At the beginning of my journey, my expectations of the corporate lifestyle were being met. I was granted a private office, minor flexibility in my schedule, and most importantly, the ability to climb the ladder as a minority. Everything I could have dreamed of became real and I was so excited! As I continued to work two times harder than my fellow colleagues, I realized that my timeless efforts, loyalty, and dedication were being undervalued. Therefore, I decided to start my own business. Leading a successful business in a world that usually doesn’t have much hope for people that look like me is a key thought that I think as I continue to grow my small business.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
CR Counseling is a counseling service that aims to create change in our clients. At CR Counseling, there is a personable atmosphere that creates space for the client to process life’s challenges. CR Counseling advocates for minority mental health awareness and the impact of eating disorders in minorities.

As a small private practice owner. I am most excited to continue to see it grow. I did not have any prior knowledge on how to build a business. I consistently conducted research, networked with the right people, and stayed connected to God in order to grow a seed that wasn’t supposed to grow. I am building a brand that represents seeing ourselves beyond the history of what we’re supposed to be.

There were mental, financial, and physical challenges that presented themselves. I would (and still do) reach out to my system for motivation and a push to keep me going. I did not make it this far without their belief in what CR Counseling could become. I’ve learned that nothing is handed to you nor can you allow people to walk all over you. You have to use your voice to get the things that you desire and be flexible enough to hear when you are wrong.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When you come to Birmingham, AL I would definitely recommend visiting the Lakeview district for a night out on the town. I would most definitely get some Simone’s Kitchen, Granny’s Fish & Grits, or Eugene’s Chicken for a meal and have dessert at K & J’s Elegant Pastries. You can’t go wrong with either one of those options!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This shoutout is dedicated to my system. There is a very small group of people who have been with me from my company’s startup. My immediate family and close friends will listen to every minor detail and give constructive criticism when needed. Every milestone I hit, I always recognize my system.
