We had the good fortune of connecting with Charity Mahone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charity, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business was a path that unfolded before me, rather than one I deliberately chose. My initial goal was simple: excel in school, earn my degrees by the grace of God, and land a well-paying 9-5 job. I did the first two with success, but when it came to finding that job after graduating with my Master’s of Sports Administration in May 2013, every door seemed to close. I applied endlessly for jobs, believing in my heart that my skills would be a valuable asset, but all I heard were crickets.

As I faced this discouraging situation, my personal life took a turn. My grandmother, suffering from dementia, came to live with my parents, and I found myself deeply involved in her care. This commitment made the prospect of a traditional job even more challenging. But, as they say, when one door closes, another opens. In my search for flexible work, I stumbled into the creative field, landing my first role providing social media support to a creative firm in Atlanta.

That job was a blessing in disguise. Not only did it fit my schedule, but it also piqued my interest in other areas of marketing, such as logo and web design. I was like a sponge, soaking up every bit of knowledge about branding and marketing. Before long, I felt confident enough in my new skills to take on clients and even lead a workshop.

However, the weight of caring for my grandmother persisted. I needed space to focus and work, and that’s when I discovered Foster ATL, a co-working space that became a home for my growing entrepreneurial spirit. In exchange for a membership, I worked the front desk part-time. Being there was pivotal. The other members were generous with their wisdom, recommending books, helping me with pricing questions, and referring clients.

Now, looking back, I am grateful. I never set out to be an entrepreneur, but this journey has led me to a place where I can help others bring their God-given visions to life. Watching ideas transform into reality is a fulfilling experience. It’s safe to say I found a passion I never knew I had. I am incredibly thankful that those 9-5 jobs never worked out because they pushed me towards the path I was meant to be on all along.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At Charity Mahone Digital Design Co., my design agency, I have dedicated myself to a distinct, personalized approach that integrates a deep understanding and realization of our clients’ visions into standout designs. With a rich portfolio of over 140 custom-built websites and recognition from clients featured on platforms like Netflix, HBO, BET, Essence, and Ebony, my mission is to ensure our work profoundly influences the marketplace, guided by Christian principles.

My agency stands out because of my extensive experience in marketing. I’ve done it all—from writing persuasive copy to managing top social media profiles, producing content, organizing marketing for live events, handling paid advertising, and much more. This varied expertise is woven into each website my team and I develop. We are committed to delivering results that are not just authentically aligned and visually stunning but are also strategically designed to boost our clients’ influence and income.

I am particularly proud of our “VIP Website in a Day” service. This unique offering makes the dream of launching a website come true in just 24 hours, all thanks to the synchronized teamwork of my outstanding crew. We handle it all – from constructing the website and writing the perfect copy for our clients, to assisting in finding top-notch photos, and even overseeing the brand photography to perfection. This service has been a game-changer, enabling individuals to market themselves swiftly and effectively, transforming their lives overnight.

I am also incredibly proud of Mahone Studios, my most recent project. As a family-run content studio, we aim to empower artists and content creators by providing an exceptional space that caters to a variety of creative endeavors, from photoshoots and video shoots to podcasts and intimate events. Every time I see our family name on the door, a surreal sense of achievement washes over me, knowing we’ve built something truly special together.

In 2016, at my family’s kitchen table, while caring for my grandmother who was fighting dementia, my journey began. It was a time when my faith in Jesus and steadfast perseverance steered me from those humble beginnings to becoming the CEO of a globally influential agency. Balancing family duties with the monumental task of nurturing a business from scratch tested and ultimately sharpened my resilience, highlighted the value of genuine relationships, and shaped my fierce determination. Navigating the ever-changing business landscape has been a masterclass in adaptability and the necessity of continuous learning—key principles that have become the foundation of the vibrant culture at my agency. My ambition is for the world to see that Charity Mahone Digital Design Co. goes beyond the conventional scope of a design agency. We serve as a beacon of hope, anchored in the belief that faith and hard work transform dreams into real successes. At my agency, we do more than just design websites or craft brands. We are committed to thoughtfully building lasting legacies, uniquely customized for every client we serve.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start by taking them to the gym with me — yes, I know it might not seem ideal, but I spend a lot of time there, and it’s a perfect way to kickstart our time together. After working up a sweat, we would deserve a treat, so off to Five Daughters Bakery we go, where their 100-layer donut holds a special place in my heart. Post-donuts, a relaxing walk along the Beltline would be next; it’s one of my favorite activities in the city.

Next on our agenda would be a visit to my content studio. It’s just up the street from Colony Square, and I am excited to show them all the latest updates. For dinner, we would have a choice between Saints & Council or Rumi’s Kitchen, where I have always enjoyed great meals.

For a dose of culture, I would take them to the High Museum of Art. It never fails to inspire with its thought-provoking exhibitions. As the evening settles, we would dress up and head to the Moonlight rooftop for dinner with a view—it’s simply stunning.

To add a bit of excitement, I plan on taking them axe throwing at American Axes, a fantastic way to release some energy. And, depending on the season, we wouldn’t miss a Hawks or Braves game to fully experience Atlanta.

To wrap up their visit, I would invite them to my church, Pure In Heart Holiness Church, for a refreshing spiritual experience. This itinerary is surely packed but designed to share some of my favorite experiences in the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Many individuals have played critical roles in my journey. First off, I would like to give a huge shout-out to my amazing parents. Being a daddy’s girl at heart, I find solace and wisdom in my father’s advice, prayers, and guidance. His steadfast faith as a man of God has always been a light for me.

Before I started my business, I felt lost and overwhelmed, continually facing rejections from jobs I was more than qualified for. During this period of uncertainty, I turned to my dad for advice. He suggested that I seek God’s will through prayer and ask God to give me a dream that would show me what He wanted me to do. Miraculously, God responded with a dream instantly that has led me to where I am today.

I would also like to thank my mom, who jokingly calls herself my VP of Strategic Marketing. Seriously, though—she is always going above and beyond for me, looking out for opportunities that might be a good fit. She is a remarkable sounding board for my ideas and my go-to prayer partner. Her intuition and strategic thinking have helped me achieve many of my goals. Whenever I encounter a snag, she is right there with just the right words to lift my spirits. Honestly, her support and insight have been invaluable. She is not just my mom but a true friend on this journey.

I can’t forget my brother, David. He has been by my side since day one. He was instrumental in helping me land my initial clients. He tirelessly talked me up to everyone he knew, convincing them of my skills even before I had the confidence to market myself. But his support doesn’t stop with just word-of-mouth. He is the person who takes my amazing brand photos and high-level video content, bringing out the best in my brand visually. In addition, he has a keen sense for marketing and is another person I’m blessed to be able to bounce ideas off. And let’s talk about his pep talks – they are nothing short of legendary. He has a way of making me feel like I can do anything, and that’s why he’s so important to me.

I must extend a special heartfelt thanks to Latonya Butts. Her role in my business cannot be overstated. Latonya has been a constant source of support and encouragement, helping me navigate the ups and downs of running my business. Her unwavering support has been crucial. It is impossible to imagine navigating this journey without her assistance. I am super thankful for her being part of the journey.

And of course, my heartfelt gratitude extends to my church community. Their prayers have been invaluable, and the prophetic words and guidance I have received from my pastor and bishop have deeply impacted my business in the best way possible. Lastly, I am truly thankful for all my friends, family, and clients who have supported me throughout this journey. Their encouragement and belief in me have been invaluable.
