We had the good fortune of connecting with Chardonnay Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chardonnay, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Being in the beauty industry outsiders are so unaware that BEAUTY is not one look. How underrepresented colored women/men are as well as plus size men and women.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
First I would like to say that I am a Black Female Business owner of my brand called Dose of Chardonnay LLC. I sell products that enhance your natural beauty and improve your skin needs. I am a licensed esthetician and a master makeup artist. So a little of what I do is provide services focused on skin care such as facials, makeup, and hair removal. I am honestly most excited about breaking barriers within the beauty industry. It’s a new day, and men and women of color as well as being plus sized are so underrepresented. When it comes to the idea of beauty. And I want to help change that idea of what beauty standards are. Also educate on healthy ways to take care of your skin. Our skin is the biggest organ we have, why would we not take care of it? I know this may sound cliché but I always wanted to help people and make them feel better and me being an esthetician allows me to do just that. I can take a person who was feeling bad or not having a good day and turn their whole day around by spreading love. Once you look good you tend to feel good and I love doing that for people. But honestly I have one special person to thank for where I am and that’s Isaiah he knew from the moment he met me that makeup was something I should be doing professionally. Even when I was attending Winthrop University he would say your heart isn’t there and he was so right. So for that I am forever grateful because he made this transition the easiest. Was this career path easy? No, Not by a long shot but it’s the most rewarding thing I ever did in my life. It’s definitely hard taking a leap out on faith and moving off a security blanket with a steady income to not knowing if you will succeed or not. But if you want something bad enough you will work on it until you do succeed. Now one bit of advice I would give to anyone starting a business is consistency because every single day is not going to be great you may have 1 client or none or you may not sell a single item but consistency allows you to keep going because the next day you might sell out and the ability to adapt to change because just because something is hot today doesn’t mean it’s gonna be the same for tomorrow. You don’t quit because it’s not easy. I want the world to know that Dose of Chardonnay LLC is here to improve skin concerns and enhance your natural beauty and to know it’s a business that strives off of making everyone feel beautiful.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well I am located in the lovely town Columbia, South Carolina which is also the capital so of course it’s ton to do here. But my favorite place for breakfast would have to be café strudel in west Columbia they have the Gouda grits and your girl loves a good mimosa and they have THE BEST. Now if you looking for a little brunch spot The Toasty Hotspot on lady street, there food going hit every single time they literally don’t miss. No complaints there. Now if you looking for a little vibe or something I would recommend The Vetropolitan on hardscrabble as well as Seven Sports Bar on Clemson… the food is amazing the vibe is more mature they have hookahs and great music. If you looking for good night out Social is a vibe as long as the DJ is good and so is the cotton gin

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely have to grant my success to my support system starting with Mrs. Candy, my four sisters Jody Wilson, Kemani Nixon, Brandy Farthing and Devoni Johnson, my brother Jason and a very special person who impacted my life dearly Isaiah. Oh and I could never forget my instructor during esthetician school Joni Floyd and her beautiful family. They are who I owe all my success to. These people are literally the epitome of what unconditional love is, I know how I am and hard to deal with but they make all this possible. So I just wanted to give them there flowers
