We had the good fortune of connecting with Chanel Plummer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chanel, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m originally from Waterloo, Iowa. My grandparents migrated from Mississippi and one from East St. Louis to sow seeds in the Midwest. Family has always been at the center of who I am. I come from two very large families that love hard. For this reason, my heart is huge and I’m extremely compassionate. More than anything, my upbringing made me appreciative for everything I have and has taught me to work for the things I want. I grew up watching my older cousins work and save for things they wanted and I was no exception to the rule. In our family, nothing was simply given to you. You had to work for it in some shape, form or fashion with guidance from our parents along the way about the best way to do so. And I’m truly grateful for having learned so much about myself during those times. I’ve been working since I was 14 and putting plans in place to live the life that I desire. With my faith and the support of my family I have accomplished amazing things and continue to set goals to challenge myself.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
By day, I’m a Consultant for a major data firm that manages the backend data for major manufacturers. I’ve gotten to where I am professionally by taking chances and betting on myself. I would take roles that would catapult me to my ideal role within an organization and continued to grow my knowledge base. Shifting my mindset and understanding my worth and value that I bring to any space that I’m in, has been the ultimate game changer for me. At one point in my professional career, I would doubt myself and dim my light for fear of being the biggest personality in the room. I no longer do this and being true to myself in any environment is a non-negotiable! By night, I’m a Lifestyle & Motherhood Blogger, managing content for my website and social media (simplychanelp.com/simplychanelp). I’m extremely passionate about being transparent and sharing experiences in life, love and parenting. It’s something that I feel is missing from a lot of spaces and I wanted to do my part in filling that void. I wanted to create a space and build a community that could learn from these experiences and encourage others to engage in sharing theirs, as well. I want the world to know that my brand is authentic and raw. I have no one to impress and you will get exactly what you see with me. There is no space for superficial things in my life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d swing through Ponce City Market followed by Westside Provisions area, so we could start embarking on the journey of eating through the city! From there, we’d definitely have to indulge in a concert. Music is my love language and concerts are a must. We’d have to stop through an amphitheater (Chastain or Lakewood) to take in the weather and some good sounds. Everyday, we’re eating! LOL. Roc South Cuisine, Breakfast at Barney’s, South City Kitchen, options are endless! But if I’m keeping it 100, the real fun resides at my place of residence (pre-Covid of course, lol). The best fun has always been having game nights or kickbacks with friends. Getting out and about in the city is cute, but too much of it, honestly runs me low. I’m more of a homebody and my best friend would certainly understand that!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to husband and immediate family (parents and brother) because they are my greatest supporters! They literally cheer me on for things that I may deem “small” and encourage me when I get overwhelmed at times. As I find the balance between being a first time mom, full-time corporate professional and up and coming content creator the love and support of my family and friends has meant the world to me. I also have an amazing group of friends that constantly tell me pour into me and support my dreams. They check-in with me to make sure I’m still working towards my goals and provide me honest feedback while doing so. There are far too many to name one-by-one and that itself is a blessing I don’t take for granted.
