We had the good fortune of connecting with Chad Grosklags and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chad, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Initially I was making things for myself. That expanded to friends and family, around that time it became obvious that I could make things for people and have a good side hustle. It wasn’t until 2020 that I dove in and went full time as a maker and content creator.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
About 2015 I started customizing Yeti tumblers when they only had stainless. I figured out how to put a design on the tumbler by masking the cup and making templates on a Cricut vinyl cutter. That led to powder coating and welding. Eventually I invested in a laser which made it possible to handle large orders. It also turned out that all of the major suppliers of tumblers had started selling their tumblers pre coated. So it turned out the laser was a great investment.

All through this I was posting on various social media how to do what I was doing. That not only helped my business grow but it gave me a way to expand into other opportunities. I now can weld for people, cut parts or signs with a plasma CNC. Essentially I keep investing into tools that broaden my opportunities depending on what customers are needing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When people come to Atlanta to visit or we are at a conference together here in Atlanta we like to do a few things. One is take them to a restaurant that they may not have in there part of the country. First on that list is Mary Mac’s Tea Room. Historic and amazing southern cooking. We also try to go to Waffle House and Chick-Fil-A. These are a little more common in some places, but I have a lot of friends that don’t have them where they live. I also try to take them to Stone Mountain Park. Wether it’s to climb or ride the tram, people are always blown away that they had never heard of it before considering it’s so much larger than Mount Rushmore.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a lot of people that have helped along the way, but my wife has been the one who has always supported me in all of my endeavors. She knows that being creative makes me happy and that I’ve always figured out how to make money with all the tools that I have acquired over the years. She puts up with the disorganization that has come along with that as well.
