We had the good fortune of connecting with Carey Fountain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carey, how do you think about risk?
I believe that if you’re not taking risks then you’re surviving instead of living. Life is unpredictable, short and any day can be your last so essentially day to day life is a risk. I think when you get anxious or uncomfortable about something it is a sign that you MUST pursue it, so essentially the urge to take risks are affirmations that you are on the right path for your purpose. My life/career has been all about risks. I immersed myself head first into the art world without any basis other than faith and the willingness to learn. Being 100% self-taught as an artist, I had to learn everything with only my curiosity as instruction. This made me comfortable with risks. So long as I can calculate my capacity, I can determine the feasibility of each risk. Our society makes it so easy for us to forget how infinite we all are and by taking risks, we remind ourselves of our limitless potential. The hardest part is showing up!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In writing this I realize it’s hard to define ourselves because we’re all walking contradictions. One minute we realize our flaws and if we’re lucky realize our true desires. There is nothing wrong with change. Our ego and sense of self convinces us we must always be right. My art comes from a place of uncertainty. We never really know what we’re doing, we’re only always trying to figure it out. Life is art, and art is an ongoing conversation that we all contribute to. The artist chooses to be aware and the conformist chooses to speak.

As a visual artist and musician I have learned that music is a release that helps me to let go of reality while visual art helps to piece together my perspective to get a better understanding. I like to explore the ‘language in the middle’. It was far from easy to get to the point I am today. All the setbacks made me develop strategies to detach from my ego to be more malleable and open to being wrong. I had to learn to learn if that makes sense.

My brand Vibes & Virtues, is about choosing to operate in a space where miracles can happen. Miracles don’t abide to logic, they only manifest through faith. Once you embrace how you feel you can understand your path so miracles can manifest. For every “vibe” there is a “virtue”.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I was showing my best friend around Atlanta, on Friday we’d fuel ourselves with some Slutty Vegan to get some tasty clean food on our stomach and then go by Edgewood to visit Our Bar. On Saturday we’d stop by Herban Fix-Vegan Kitchen, hit up piedmont park and then end the night at Revery Virtual Reality bar. On Sunday we’d hit up brunch at Oak ATL after church gets out then stop by the High museum.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It is very hard for me to pinpoint one specific person or group to dedicate a shoutout to because I would exclude many others who all helped to shape my perspective. My success began with a belief in my ability to manifest the life I knew my spirit called for. So much failure, heartbreak and setbacks were mixed with reassurance in the form of lessons provided by so many people. Outside of pinpointing a specific person or group, the book “Mystery Experience” by Tim Freke was one of the most influential books in my life. The book is a philosophical spirituality book and really put into perspective the importance of embracing the mystery of life. So often as humans we try to define this universe when it is infinitely more intelligent and expansive then we have the ability to perceive, thus it is important to embrace the unknowingness and find comfort in it.
