We had the good fortune of connecting with Candice Spicer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Candice, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I have always taken risks, some rather unnecessary than others but always learned something in the end. I got tired of talking about what I was going to do because I may fail, so If I didn’t try, I could never say that failure was imminent. My grandfather used to say, “nothing beats a failure but a try.” I have been such a risk taker that the day I was scheduled to close on my first house, I lost my job, with no income coming in and a new home it challenged me to hustle harder.

What should our readers know about your business?

I own a Vintage Store, My Vintage Home. We sell “All Things Vintage” specializing in 70s, 80s, 90s and Y2K Home Furnishings, Decor and Fashion. I am proud that a set decorator from Lions Gate Studios working on the Black Mafia Family (BMF) season 3 set walked in and fell in love with our store and the items we sell. A large part of the set was purchased from our store and not even an hour before he arrived I was looking to take on a 4th job. I joked with him that I was one day from “showing my toes on Only Fans” he had just saved the world from my unmanicured feet, their belief in our product gave me the confidence to keep going.

Getting where I am today business wise comes from my foundation of growing up in Tuskegee, Alabama seeing people who looked like me thriving in all types of businesses and professions. From Doctors to Lawyers, Grocers, Pharmacists, Architects as well as my own grandfather who owned one of the first black owned motels and Shell gas stations in the State of Alabama. My dad Walter Spicer (deceased) the City Planner for Tuskegee and my mom, Dr. Nan Poole Spicer, a musician who has worked with some of the best in the business to include Lionel Richie and Ray Charles.

There are still many challenges since I am a self-funded company, but using other people’s money means you have to pay it back, so if this goes south, I can just pack up my ball and go home. I still work a fulltime job and some gig stuff when my non-existent time permits. I have a YouTube Channel (Tha Vintage Diva) where I inform people about value in grandmas’ old stuff. I am still learning many lessons, one in which still remains true to never judge a book by its cover,

What I want people to know about my brand and story is that there is nothing wrong with being a little eclectic in your approach, own who you are and be proud of what you enjoy. I have met many people from all backgrounds that say I am the first black vintage store owner they have ever seen or met. Some question my knowledge base but after talking with me understand my love and excitement for All Things Vintage. Although a little surprised I am glad I get to be somewhat of a trailblazer for the next generation. Can’t wait to share what I am cooking up next!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Since I am a creative an exciting week with me consists of

Atlanta Botanical Gardens in the evening it’s beautiful

The High Museum for the latest collections

Goodwill and any random Thrift Store probably should have listed that first

The Atlanta History Center

MLK National Historic Site as I still volunteer there periodically and it is beautiful at sundown

Fellini’s Pizza

A good mom and pop or like we say in the south, a hole in the wall restaurant like Kings Family Restaurant or This Is It

And a Jam Session and/or Pop Up we have at the store
