We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittney Cobb and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittney, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Growing my business has been a natural progression. It started with my Mental Health Instagram Account @ablackfemaletherapist which I created to provide education and resources. I wanted to share what I’ve learned on my journey about mental health to people who may not have access to Therapy and mental health resources.
As I grew as a Clinician, my content grew, following grew and people (other creators, influencers, Therapists, Mental Health Advocates etc.) began reaching out to collaborate. This encouraged me to start my consultation business – Be Well Mental Health & Consultation Services PLLC to further educate and normalize mental health, especially in the black community.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Along with running my consulting business, I work as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for a community health center in NC. My journey has been full of challenges. Also full of many blessings along the way. I’ve learned there is power in having the courage to step out of my comfort zone. Every time I stepped away from my norm I gained something. Whether it was more confidence or information, more opportunities. Each time, I elevated. For a short period of time, I wanted things to happen for me quick. I was investing my time and resources while believing if I fail once – it’s my sign to move on. But I learned – when you have a passion for something – keep working to pursue it. It’s in the valleys of life that we build strength and perseverance to keep moving forward. The valleys only heightened my gratitude because I know the work I put in to get the reward.
What has helped me along the way is my faith and having the love, support and prayers of family. I am a spiritual person and there have been many along my journey who spoke greatness into my life. Some have been strangers and others close to me. My family has always been a source of encouragement. My parents instilled in me humility, the value of helping others and staying dedicated. My purpose on this earth is very clear and knowing this has helped ground me on the days I feel the weight of all I carry. I celebrate small wins because it reminds me to stay faithful on the path and reinforces why I do the work I do.
I believe in Therapy and how gaining tools and information + taking action can transform a person’s life. After becoming a Therapist – I found myself encouraging others to do something I hadn’t done myself – seek help. “You can’t guide others where you haven’t gone before.” Going to Therapy helped me grow as a human and as a Clinician. Through Therapy I learned how to name my feelings, I learned boundaries, assertiveness, how to let go of things I cannot control, strategies to manage my anxiety, conflict resolution, what a healthy relationship looks and feels like and more. I want for others to gain what I have gained. The freedom to live a full and happy life despite the obstacles life can bring.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am super low key but love adventure so many of the places I would take my friends would involve food + art and being active. I would first take them on a boat tour over Lake Norman and probably go out to enjoy food and arts in the Noda area in North Charlotte. Later go to the new Brewery in Mooresville. We would definitely enjoy some sort of Watersport one day on the Lake. Then we’d go to the wine bar in Davison to have lunch. I’d probably take a hike at Crowders or drive to Blue Ridge Parkway.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my parents, Marvin & Priscilla Cobb. They have been my number one supporters throughout my journey and made countless sacrifices to make sure my needs were met in the best way they knew how. They always encouraged me to follow my dreams and every time I set a goal – they cheered me on. Near and far. I will always have gratitude for their love.
