We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittnee Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittnee, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in Alabama and grew up in Columbus, Ga. I spent majority of my child hood watching my paternal grandmother cook in the kitchen. There was always this upspoken rule; “if you’re not helping me in the kitchen, then stay out of it.” So being as young as I was I did just that. The reward of cornbread that was sweetened a little and looked like pound cakes was always a treat. I was born around Easter so every year I got a special birthday cake. One strong memory of a coconut bunny tail. I sat close to the kitchen without interrupting and I took in the memories. As I became older I would watch my mother doing cakes and soaked all of that up as well. As an adult I want to create spaces that teach people the basics of cooking and baking while triggering those childhood memories and cultivate those special times with their families. I want people to be able to use baking as a outlet for peace of mind. Yes baking is a science but the reward when you get it right is worth it. I’m a fun loving person but when it comes to me being in the kitchen my family says I’m a drill sergeant at times, lol. I like to incorporate my children into learning some math skills while learning baking skills too. It has its ups and downs but they are getting it and it brings us together in a different way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love being able to take something as simple as sugar, butter & flour and create edible art. Not all have to be elaborate, sometimes its the simplest ones that can truly make someone’s day. At that beginning I tried to cheat my way thru and it failed horribly. From cakes toppling over, to buttercream not having the correct rations and sliding off cakes. I cringe just thinking about it. I didn’t have a single idea about what I was doing. It took years for me to hone my craft and build my skillset. It took years to hone it all in and to find my WHY!! You have to stop looking at everyone else work or the amount of people watching the reels and such. You will get stuck and spiral down if you do that. That was the hardest lesson to learn. Were in a social media forward society now and I didn’t want to post about “MY” stuff. Slowly I’m getting better. My brand is centralized around creating other lovers for the art of cooking /baking without judgement.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First thing Saturday morning were going to where the food trucks are!!! Some of my favorite food trucks in the city are Graffiti Foods – were ordering burgers or a philly for sure. Now if we’re in a BBQ mood were definitely hitting up the J Juniors BBQ truck for some delicious Midwest Flavor!!! For something sweet were going to get a classic funnel cake from Da Funnel Cake Factory. Then afterwards were going to walk that off at the Riverwalk taking in the sites and just getting some fresh air. We would probably finish that day with some shopping at Target or other home stores. We love a good random makeover of whatever room comes to mind. Of course mine is the kitchen. I want to create a space where I can do my custom orders as well as teach and do mini session classes for kids and adults. Just baking and some fun.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this shoutout to my 3 children as they are the reasons I keep pushing forward and making more goals for me to attain. I would love to give a strong shoutout to those in my family that has molded me into the Chef I am today. Also giving a huge shoutout to some cake mentors in the cake community that has been a huge help to me in more than a few ways; Porsha Kimble & Jeromie Jones. I will give continuous accolades to these amazing people. Each of them in there own way have helped my cake journey much and I am truly thankful for the endless knowledge that they share on a daily basis. I have enjoyed every online and in-person course I have take with them.
