We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Symone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittany, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Art is my best friend, aiding in my needs of expression, comfort and trauma release. I am most happy when creating, in any form: painting, illustrating, sewing, writing. When my hands are at “play” the world disappears along with whatever was bothering me. Art became a closer friend working in the corporate design world, dealing with the lows and high of adulthood, to discover my true potential. Through creative exploration, I have reclaimed my purpose and moving into a space of servitude. Currently, I am focused on my latest project, NÜBYGNINGS, an illustrated blog of wholeness from my personal journey and anonymous submissions from the community.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is the integration of fashion illustration, Kemetic (Egypt) hieroglyphs, and some may say “anime.” My work displays the beautiful flaw-filled process of creation. I don’t like to hide errors, I feel it creates the piece, making it unique and tells a unique story. In an age when digital art is at the forefront, tangible medium, I hold close to my heart, since there’s no “backspace” or “undo” button. I do offer digital services, but I will never give up my marker and paper. In my personal studies and exploratory work, my medium choice is pen and paper but lately, stepping into becoming an “eco-friendly” artist, I save much and “use what I have” to better protect Mother Earth and create from what is already.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Maketto in Washington D.C for a nice bit to eat and a great vibe, and across the street is Gallery O on O, so we would venture there for some visual art site seeing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Everyone I encountered along the journey and stayed by my side, are the reasons for my success. When it comes to books, there are many but More than Enough by Elaine Welteroth, helped to reshape my path and question much during the locked-in period and ongoing world changes. Issa Rae and Ava Duvernay and their constant effort to be and give their best in all they touch. Locally, it’s the womxn business circles I’ve been blessed to be apart of including Candice Napper of E.Y.L. 365 and Katherine Searcy of Deep Breath Healing.
