We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Shakir and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittany, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was taking something I was very passionate about, something I did often, and configuring a way to monetize from it. I’m a first responder full time and I always care for people in the community but I love traveling to escape the stress of dealing with that career, and with understanding mental health, I was always made travel essential. So, I developed a business where I show essential workers how to prioritize themselves for the sake of their mental health through all forms of travel.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a police officer and what sets me apart from others is that I sing for the police department as a form of community outreach. I’m able to bridge the gap in the community and allow people to see police officers as normal people in a positive perspective. I’m most proud of the amount of lives I have been able to touch in a positive manner. I got into where am I by singing during police academy and the right people heard me which paved the way for the rest of my journey on the department. It hasn’t always been easy but nothing is ever trouble for long, the department is ever changing. Lessons I have learned is that even though this career is vital to the world, and it can be stressful, I have to take time to put myself first with self care in order to retire from my career. I want the world to know that mental health is important and even with being an essential worker and taking care of everyone else’s needs, it’s vital to prioritize yourself, and I can show you how to do just that.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being that I am in the DC area, During the weekdays I would definitely take my friend to all the museums such as Smithsonian’s, as they are all free. We would eat at carry outs and enjoy chicken and mambo sauce. We would also listen to live bands at night such as a gogo. Weekend we would have to enjoy the brunch culture.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my life to my parents. They are the ones that made travel a priority in our lives and understood that being cultured is important. My parents are the ones that influenced me to be a travel bug.
