We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Hawkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I created Black Angel creations to highlight the importance of black female artists and black women in general. Since growing up I’ve always been a minority in the artistic field and was told this would not be a real career field for me to be successful in. I’ve always felt black women through media and art history have not been shown in a light of respect that we truly deserve. I wanted to create a platform to do what I love which is to create art while simultaneously promoting diversity , strength and the beauty of black women.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I enjoy having my own unique style that is a mixture of realism and a bold graphic nature. I highlight the beauty of black people in all shades, colors, and shapes and take pride in being a black women and showing those experiences in my work. My Art is centered in the symbol of the Angel. I’ve chosen the angel as a symbol because the Bible tells us they represent high ethical and moral standards and are highly intelligent, a prospective historically the media and art world refuse to depict black people in. I wanted to take the traditional idea of what this symbol looks like and apply it to my own experiences. Highlighting what I once thought were flaws, dealing with eczema, my body image or learning to love my natural hair, and showing their is beauty in diversity and being uniquely you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love when I can take time to destress and hangout with my friends because it allows me to get a new experience or outlook on life that I can reflect back in my own work. My favorite thing to do is travel to experience new places, food, and culture. If given the opportunity I would love to travel to Japan! I have been blessed and fortunate to travel to beautiful places such as, London and Paris. However I want to authentically experience a culture completely different than my own. I would love to eat authentic Japanese cuisine and Japan houses some of the biggest museums and installations in the world. My first stop would be the World’s first digital art museum, I couldn’t imagine the excitement of seeing a digital world come to life. As I grow older, I enjoy the nostalgia of remembering my childhood and the fun and wonder of just being a kid. So my next stop with my friends would be visiting Mario Kart and Super Nintendo World to experience a digital game I loved come to real life. I think the most interesting experiences are trying new things, and realizing how much the world has to offer outside of your own bubble.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I always shoutout my family and friends, they always encourage my ideas and push me to step further outside of my comfort zone. Specifically my mother and aunts have been great mentors in being both a business woman, but also being an advocate for my community of black women. I get my inspiration and passion from being surrounded by other black women fighting to make sure our voices stories and experiences are told in a deserving light.
