We had the good fortune of connecting with Bria Woo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bria, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I initially came up with the idea of Spicy HairCare because of my own hair struggles. For years, I couldn’t find a strong enough edge control that not only had a good consistency but also didn’t flake. Any product I used was either too thick, didn’t have a good hold or simply would turn my hair white after one use. I knew I needed a better product and was determined to find one for myself and people just like me.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business was born during the pandemic – a very uncertain time and also a nerve wrecking time. I didn’t know if I’d be successful because of the circumstances, and I also felt like purchasing hair care items would be the last thing on people’s minds. Luckily, I did such a good job with promoting my products and getting the word out so the support was actually overwhelming. I continued advertising and even delivering products by hand to customers just to give them the Spicy HairCare experience; it wasn’t easy but it laid a foundation of trust and good customer service.

I want the world to know that my business is made for folks who have always felt different or unique – either because of their hair type or hair style preferences. Being different is beautiful and we should all embrace what makes us different.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If one of my best friends or homegirls were in town, the first place we’d go is a cute and swanky restaurant for cute pictures and a nice aesthetic. I’ve completely fallen in love with Osha Sushi and Yao. Both are Asian Fusion restaurants but the drinks are awesome and the food is superb. The next stop would be a cute lounge for some good vibes and music, and of course we’d get breakfast at Waffle House. You can never go wrong with a spa day, and a little shopping is always therapeutic.

I’m a huge movie buff so AMC movie theatre would be our next stop. After that, we could check out Chateau Elan winery for some delicious wine and wrap up the trip with a visit to Painted Duck.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout every woman in my life who has been influential and made me feel comfortable with being unapologetic. For years I would shrink myself because I felt like I was taking up too much room – whether it be my mindset, my goals or my vision. I’ve been blessed to have a grandmother, mother, aunties, cousins and friends who all remind me that I’m wonderfully and beautifully made.
