We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandy Pitts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandy, what do you attribute your success to?
Team work makes the dream work! SPILL IT Card Game was founded by three friends whose friendship was formed in Hampton University’s 5-Year MBA Program. After 5 years of numerous group projects, we view SPILL IT as a ‘group project’ of sorts on steroids. We’ve had 5 years getting into a groove that allowed us to be scholars, yet very active college students. This foundation has been a major key of establishing a balance between our friendship, our lives, and our business.

With entrepreneurship comes a lot of big and small tasks to actually making things happen. To make sure we’re continuously tackling those task, each founder is tasked with ownership of certain areas and we continue to hold each other accountable to making sure things get done. Although not always easy, SPILL IT has become a safe space for us to figure things out with the help of trusted partners. We each have individual goals of entrepreneurship and business adventures, so SPILL IT has been a building ground to establish good habits, learn more about business, and learn more about ourselves.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We work, we play, we SPILL IT. One thing we extremely value is that each of the founders has taken a different journey with their corporate background. We currently are all working full-time in Corporate America, while balancing SPILL IT.

Brandy is proud member of Taylor CPA & Associates, a black-owned accounting firm. Brandy has an interest for business accounting and her position allows her to bring back strong insight to the team on how to handle money and best business practices from a financial standpoint. Elexxus is currently a full-time Consultant with Accenture. While at Accenture, Elexxus has learned a great deal of project management strategies and viewpoints that we use to guide our own project. Her experiences has contributed to her strong eye for the details and follow through of projects. Christian was recently promoted to project manager at Amazon, but brings in Human Resources background, as well. Her roles have constantly reinforced us to effectively communicate amongst ourselves and with our community.

The combined exposure to the different institutions have allowed the team to see and learn things from a lot of perspectives. Although we bring things back to SPILL IT, one thing we pride ourselves on is creating our own culture. Even though our SPILL IT meeting don’t look like our work meetings, it doesn’t mean things aren’t getting done. We have established our own ‘corporate’ rules of business. This atmosphere also allow each member to explore their other interest. Brandy loves event planning, Elexxus could network her way into any room, and it’s nothing for Christian to tap into her creative marketing side. At SPILL IT, we get to do just that.

Each season comes with different challenges of growing a business, but one thing we are sure on is that we were suppose to do this and do it together. Our hope is that when people play our game or attend our events that they can feel the energy of what we’re trying to show/bring into the world. We’re just a group of amazing black-women following their dreams and creating generational wealth for our future families. We believe being able to fulfill your purpose in life is within your reach and we hope SPILL IT will continue to bring people together and connect strangers, “future friends”, that will help them along their journey.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would have to Shoutout the Hampton University 5-Year MBA Program. With the leadership and guidance of key individuals, such as the past and current Dean, Dr. Sidney Credle and Dr. Ziette Hayes, we would not have the vision or foundation to make SPILL IT happen. Every Wednesday and most Monday’s, the School of Business’s (SOB) Leadership Application Program features Black CEOs, VP’s, Entrepreneurs from Fortune 500 companies to prospering businesses. By the third-year (if not the second), a switch turns on in you “like dang, these people look like me and their doing amazing things… there’s no reason I can’t be doing the same”. The SOB program, staff, curriculum, and continuous exposure set a solid foundation of business must-haves, as well. We were aware of topics that mattered for long term success, such as, importance of having solid financial understanding, establishing ownership of your creation (trademarks and etc.), and knowing to create strong internal practices. We thank the Hampton SOB for installing into us that 1. we can and 2. how we can!
Also, God and our parents. Amen.
