We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Cowans and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandon, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Well, when I was younger, I used to take a lot of pictures of buses and trains with whatever phone I had at the time. Once I entered high school, I joined the photography department and it started from there. When I got my first DSLR, I was still mainly taking pictures of buses and trains. However, as time went on, I started to venture into doing portraits of people and I realized that I’m really good at it. Now, 9 years later, and I’m still going strong, but it’s evolved into doing videography and web series production as well.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I started my whole artistic career with my love for buses and trains. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always had a love for them and have always taken pictures of them over the years, whether it was on my phone or a little point and shoot camera. Once high school came around, I took my first introduction to photography class. That was the real kickstarter into my career. Now, I’ve been doing this for almost 10 years now, I only feel like this is the beginning.

However, it wasn’t an easy journey. I was young and letting my insecurities doubt my skills and make me question every creative decision I was making. Then, to add to it, I lost my father who was my biggest supporter, which set me into a deep depression. There were several factors that tried to bring me down, but i did not succumb to it. Here I am, 9 years later, still killing it and improving every day.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from doing this all this time, patience is a virtue. If you are talented and have a gift, don’t rush the rewards. They will come at their own time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely the Ponce City Market. There’s some cool stuff around there and got a little something for everyone. I also like Atlantic Station too. Cool place to hang out

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout my dad. His one mission in life was making sure that I was the best person I could be. Even though he is no longer with us, I’m grateful for every opportunity I get because I know he gave me the tools to become the person I am today and he would be proud of what his son has accomplished.
