We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandi Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandi, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
So the single most important decision I made that contributed to my success was investing in my knowledge of the business itself. Buy as many courses, books, seminars, etc as you can afford. Ever since then, I found out that success is really in the shift of the mindset and you can learn to start pointing the finger at yourself and hold yourself accountable for your own success.

It’s very easy for us to say that we don’t have the resources to spend money on things for our business. I realized that books are less than $20 and less than the same $20 I used to spend on dining out, going to Starbucks, and TV streaming subscriptions cost over a year. I changed my choices. So the best decision I made that contributed to my success was investing in my knowledge about business and changing the way I approached my choices and decision making. I realized that the choices/decisions I make today lay the foundation for the life I ultimately want to live in.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The journey of where I came from wasn’t easy but all was worth it. I didn’t have my parent in my life from a young age but was blessed enough to have a family that loved me, took me in, and raised me the best they could. Seeing that I played basketball all my life all the way from high school to the WNBA retiring was hard for me.

Simply because I had no clue about what I wanted to do with my life after basketball. I know I wanted something I loved just as much and didn’t seem like work. I knew it wouldn’t be coaching or continuing in that capacity because I was done with basketball for sure.

After working some 9-5 jobs for years I wouldn’t say I hated but it wasn’t the best path after playing basketball. Being in charge of your own schedule, traveling, etc is what I liked about pro basketball. So I realized the job at a desk all day wasn’t going to work. I picked up a camera while playing overseas and fell in love with the details of what it took to take pictures and video. I saw folks on youtube and just thought ” oh I can do that”. Plus when I saw that Ava Duvernay did pick up a camera until she was 32 and saw all she had done I was like ” Yeah this is the lane I want to be in”

The challenge I faced was being an artist/ Creative over being a businesswoman. I just wanted to film cool stuff but realized that I have to learn the business side of things to make some real money. So just as much effort as I put into understanding the creative side of things I also put that same energy in learning how to function like a business and not a freelancer. Nothing wrong with freelancing but it just didn’t work for me.

The lessons I learned in the journey of understanding business are the shift in my mindset and choosing to fuel my brain better with the things I decided to consume. I read a lot more books now and am not afraid to invest in a course or two when I can. I am also joining more seminars that are beneficial to my knowledge of the business. So I am always trying to learn more.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Vegas so it’s not really about what can you do it’s about what you want to do. For me, I am not being on the club or much on the strip. As a local, you really refrain from going to the strip like that unless visiting friends insist. BUT I do enjoy the idea of a stay-cations at a hotel. For me, it would likely be Resorts World because I haven’t been there yet.

Most of the time I stick to cafes, sushi, and lounge spots, and all seem to be my favorite as I have yet to dine at one I haven’t liked.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my little sister Breanni and my cousin Mia. They both support me in every way they can I am grateful for it. Also, my family thanks you for raising me and giving me what you could with what you knew. And my friends who support me in every way they can. And lastly my creative family… yall know who you are.
