Meet Black° Adam | Musical Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Black° Adam and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Black° Adam, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I’ve found as I get older that my work life balance has started to shift a lot more in favor of work. That’s not just the working aspect of it either; that includes everything surrounding it like preparing for work or recovering after a hard day’s work. Just in general I think a lot of people take for granted that period right when they first consider themselves adults because they still haven’t been hit with the full responsibility of it yet. So now that those extra things are starting to settle on my shoulders I find that I’m having less time for the “life” part of life. It’s not the worst thing in the world, but I think it has definitely forced me to become more intentional with my time. As a kid, if me and my friends wanted to hang out or make music, that’s the only thing you needed and everyone could link up and figure out the details on the fly. Now you need all the “who, what, when, where, why” worked out before you even consider it because you have that opportunity cost hanging above your head where you could be doing something else that needs doing. Inking out the plan isn’t part of the experience anymore. As it relates to music, this can be a good and a bad thing. That uncertainty and experimentation is where a lot of the most fun creative moments come from, so if you don’t have that time to spare the art might suffer. But at the same time, I’ve definitely been to a lot of sessions where nobody had a plan and nothing gets done after hours of just messing around. So when you’re being more intentional and know what you’re trying to do, it can help you pull a project together more effectively. Pros and cons.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to thing my music is a lot more introspective than most of the Rap you find out there. The majority of my themes center around things that spark emotion and how we interact with those things and those emotions. I am a producer as well as a vocalist, so I like to experiment with musical style, and the ways that I can use my voice or the voices of those around me to portray what I am going for in a particular song. I wouldn’t necessarily consider myself “successful” just yet, but I am proud to have a small group of people that enjoy what I do and are excited to hear new releases. The more music I make, the better I get at knowing how I want something to sound and having the end result match with my intentions, so I’ve learned to learn as much as I can and just keep pumping out music that I’m proud of.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The number one spot that is a must-visit for me is Controllerise, a weekly gathering of music-heads, anime lovers, and gamers that takes place every Monday night at Monday Night Brewing. I’ve heard the best DJ sets there, eaten the best food, discovered new shows to watch, and played my favorite games. I would also recommend a walk down the Beltline near Ponce City Market and exploring the food over there. If they’re into the touristy stuff, then of course the World of Coke and the Aquarium downtown, but I would especially recommend the High Museum of Art. There are some great improv comedy spots in Atlanta like Dad’s Garage or Village Theatre, and the Vortex has great stand-up shows as well. Then for nightlife, I would ride through Edgewood and see what’s going on.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out Akirah Renée, JT the Human, and my Bassmint Fresh family for always supporting me and pushing me to keep creating music, as well as connecting me to opportunities and people that I would never have found otherwise
