We had the good fortune of connecting with Bhavna Misra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bhavna, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I thought about my creative vision while starting my own business, it felt like the heart of my journey. It began with reflecting on my artistic identity—what truly made my work unique. I often asked myself what themes and techniques defined my style. Understanding this helped me carve out a space in the art world that felt authentic to me.

I also considered the messages I wanted to convey through my art. There were experiences, emotions, and societal issues that deeply resonated with me, and I wanted my work to reflect that. This purpose not only fueled my creativity but also helped me connect with my audience on a deeper level.

Inspiration was everywhere, and I drew from various sources—nature, culture, personal experiences, and even the work of other artists. This tapestry of influences shaped my vision and informed the stories I wanted to tell through my art.

As I looked to the future, I set long-term goals for where I wanted to be. Maybe it was exhibiting in renowned galleries or creating a signature line of products. These aspirations provided direction and helped me stay focused on what I wanted to achieve.

I was also driven by a desire to innovate and experiment. I loved pushing the boundaries of my creativity, whether through new techniques or materials. Embracing this spirit of exploration often led to unexpected and exciting developments in my work.

Equally important was my connection with my audience. I wanted my art to evoke emotions and foster engagement. Thinking about how my vision resonated with others influenced not only the artwork I created but also how I marketed and presented it.

Ultimately, integrating my art with business realities was a balancing act. I strived to package my work in a way that remained true to my vision while also appealing to potential buyers. Finding that harmony was crucial for sustaining both my artistic integrity and my business.

In that journey, my creative vision acted as a guiding light, shaping every decision I made as I turned my passion into a viable enterprise.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Please tell us more about your art. What sets you apart from others? What are you most proud of or excited about?

My art is a vibrant celebration of the beauty of nature, where I strive to present it in a way that feels alive—almost as if the trees are dancing and the colors transcend their usual forms. What sets me apart is my deep respect for the natural world and my unique perspective on how I interpret it. I blend a disciplined art practice with the art of creation to explore the intricate relationships within nature, aiming to evoke emotions that resonate with viewers. I’m most proud of my ability to inspire others to see the world through my lens, to appreciate its beauty in a new light.

How did you get to where you are today professionally? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?

My journey as an artist has been a blend of passion, perseverance, and constant learning. Initially, I faced many challenges, from self-doubt to the complexities of running an art business. I tackled these hurdles by committing to a disciplined art practice, dedicating time each day to hone my skills and explore new techniques.

One of the most significant lessons I learned was the importance of educating myself—whether it was through reading books, taking workshops, or simply experimenting in my studio. I realized that making art and managing the business side are two distinct realms that require different approaches, so I treated them as such, giving each the attention it deserves.

Networking has also been essential in my journey. I’ve built meaningful relationships with fellow artists, mentors, and supporters, which has enriched my perspective and provided invaluable guidance. I believe in the power of community, and helping others along the way has not only strengthened those bonds but also inspired my own growth. This journey has taught me to trust my instincts, embrace challenges, and continually evolve as an artist.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?

One crucial lesson I’ve learned is the importance of observation. Taking the time to truly appreciate the nuances of nature allows me to convey its beauty authentically in my work. I’ve also discovered the value of integrating different disciplines—bringing together science and art enriches my creative process and deepens my appreciation for the world around me. Finally, I’ve realized that vulnerability is a strength; sharing my interpretations encourages others to connect with my art on a personal level.

What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

I want the world to know that my brand is dedicated to celebrating nature in all its forms. My story is one of respect, exploration, and wonder. Through my art, I hope to inspire others to see the extraordinary in the ordinary—encouraging them to appreciate the beauty of the natural world and its intricacies. Ultimately, my goal is to create pieces that evoke a sense of connection to nature and foster a deeper understanding of our place within it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Growing up, I was surrounded by creativity and inspiration, and I owe much of my artistic journey to the incredible people in my life. My grandfather was my first muse. He had a way of seeing the world that ignited my imagination. I would sit for hours listening to his stories about art and life, captivated by his passion. His friend, Premchandji, an accomplished artist, played a pivotal role in my development. He recognized my talent early on and helped others see it too. His encouragement gave me the assurance I needed to pursue my artistic dreams.

As I ventured into my teenage years, my parents became my biggest cheerleaders. They recognized my love for art and provided me with the resources and opportunities to explore it, which instilled in me the self-belief to dream big. My family continued to rally behind me as I considered turning my passion into a business. Their belief in my potential fueled my determination. While they didn’t specifically encourage me to enroll in art classes, I took that step on my own. There, I met an inspiring art instructor, James Wu, who is a renowned artist in his own right. He not only honed my skills but also encouraged me to start showing my work in galleries. His faith in my abilities opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me.

When I joined an art organization, I found a network of like-minded individuals who shared my ambitions. They offered guidance, mentorship, and a sense of belonging that was invaluable. It was here that I began to understand what it meant to be an artist and an artist supporter. My special thanks are dedicated to Mary Bobik, an award winning artist herself, who is always there to encourage and motivate others.

Throughout this journey, my friends have been my constant source of encouragement. They celebrate my milestones and provide constructive feedback, always reminding me of my capabilities. Their support creates a safety net that allows me to take risks and experiment with my art.

Reflecting on my path, I see a tapestry woven from the threads of inspiration, encouragement, and unwavering support. Each person I mentioned has played a significant role in shaping who I am today, both as an artist and as an entrepreneur. I’m deeply grateful for their influence, and I strive to honor their belief in me by pursuing my passion wholeheartedly.
