We had the good fortune of connecting with Betty Green aka PhettieG and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Betty, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I was an entertainer before I even knew it since a little girl. I loved to dance and I loved to sing. I would act out scenes and lip sync music videos. I always knew my passion was within the media arts field. It was something that I enjoyed and that didn’t feel like work which is why I pursued my careers in acting, broadcasting, disc jockey, and dancing.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My main dream growing up was to become a working actor for TV/Film. Instead of pursuing a degree within theatre arts I chose the broadcasting route. Although broadcast journalism is very different from the acting craft I wanted to work with the camera and microphone. I completed my B.A. in Broadcast Journalism from Cal State Los Angeles. For a few months prior to receiving my degree, I was living in my car. I did not have a job at the time so I struggled with finances and food. I committed acts of theft for food and personal hygiene products. Part of my day consisted of studying and doing work while the other part was surviving.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout is dedicated to my parents who are Tongan immigrants that migrated to the U.S. back in the 80’s. Also to those that opened their homes to me during hard times in my journey.
