We had the good fortune of connecting with Betsy McLeod and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Betsy, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
In 2020, I moved from California to Charleston to continue my career in restaurants. I found that the labor practices were comparatively unethical. I was also making less money! So I chose to start creating something that would maybe sell. It sort of caught on, and I ended up pursuing it more seriously.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My background is in photo, design, craft cocktails, and wine. Those all culminate into a love of the earth, and beauty. Organic and minimalist visuals are inspirational for my designs. I’m also passionate about sustainability and anti-violence initiatives.

Working for myself has been the most difficult and scary thing I have ever experienced. There is an enormous amount of questioning and self-doubt that happens in the beginning phases of entrepreneurship. I am in my 30s though, and I have seen my peers succeed at their passions. I’ve seen people stick with something for a long time and really see it through. So I always have to tell myself to stay positive, stay true to my vision, and just don’t give up. Ever.

One great lesson I have learned is that everyone has a different budget. As an accessible brand/artist, I need to have products that people can afford. Especially in times like these! I can still have the products that take time and cost a little more, but also some simple cool things that anyone can enjoy.

My brand is just cool and easygoing. My art makes people happy. The undertone of my brand is peace and kindness, to the planet, animals, the vibes, and each other.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to the vintage and handmade community in Charleston! These are great folks who are always organizing new markets for us to meet, sell, and support each other. They inspire me to create and be true to myself!
