We had the good fortune of connecting with Beth Mello and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beth, what role has risk played in your life or career?
One very important lesson that I’m still learning is to not hesitate. It’s very easy to criticize yourself and your work, and who needs another critic? Learning to accept that things will never be perfect and that there is always room for improvement makes a world of a difference in this industry. So no more second-guessing, and no more holding back. There’s no chance to discover your true potential that way!
Stepping outside your comfort zone can be difficult but it’s what will inevitably fuel your fire.
Once I let go of my self doubt and began to explore myself, my style and abilities, I didn’t want to look back at what once was. Letting go of the parts of myself who worry too much about what other people think and starting to please myself for a change, showed me that my comfort zone is what’s really holding me back.
Not only that, but taking that step out of my comfort zone showed me the beauty of experiencing new things. Sometimes new ventures can be intimidating, but I learned while working in many different areas of makeup artistry, that it’s almost always worth a try. You never know what an odd job or creative project will teach you. Knowledge is power, and learning from your mentors and peers is imperative while growing as a creative. Never underestimate this.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to think that my art is unique in it’s own way. I love to stylize everything I do even if it’s like cosplay makeup. I take a lot of pride in my style, and love when people recognize my work. It is so reassuring to me!
When working on social media, consistency is fundamental. Dedicating most if not all of my time to my craft was a tough lifestyle change, but I’d rather constantly do what I love in hopes of “making it” than never getting a chance to do it at all. Sadly, due to my T1D diagnosis in 2021, I wasn’t able to stay as consistent as I would’ve hoped for. But I’m ready to get back on track this new year! There are always roadblocks, but I know in my heart that makeup artistry is a dream worth chasing after.
My personal artistry is my way of expressing myself and letting my imagination run wild. I love glitter, pearls, fun colors and patterns, and letting myself play with these different elements helps me bring my concepts to life.
I also love helping others bring their concepts to life. It’s so special when other creatives contact me to design looks for them. Whether it’s high fashion, or fantasy, or even gluing gemstones all over their body, I always enjoy the process so much!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In all honesty I’m not the coolest gal in Atlanta. I spend most of my time in my studio and with my family. I tend to visit places around the city that revolve around the arts, and it’s usually with family and friends. The Atlanta botanical garden has always been the most beautiful place to visit in the city, in my opinion. Not only do they have gorgeous botany, they also host a variety of exhibits and events. I’ve been visiting the garden since I was a kid, so it holds a special place in my heart!
I couldn’t go without mentioning my favorite place in Atlanta, Industry Makeup Academy. I graduated in August 2021 with my second master certification in makeup artistry and recommend that all beauty lovers check it out! The staff is just so amazing, some of the most kind and supportive professionals you will ever meet.
And as a lover of the arts, I would love to tag along with anyone who may visit the High Museum of Art. I’ve been there probably a hundred times and always bring home little souvenirs! Every exhibit and event is so captivating. Plus, it’s super family friendly!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my successes to my amazing mother. She is an incredible woman who came to the US leaving behind her dreams of becoming an artist in Brazil. I take great pride in bringing her along my journey as I try to do the same here. I am blessed to have her as my #1 supporter, she is truly one of my biggest inspirations. I will never be able to put into words how grateful I am to have such an amazing woman in my life.
