We had the good fortune of connecting with Bernice Barton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bernice, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was to being able to create my own schedule and earn money by doing the one thing I love, being a Pro Makeup Artist. Therefore, creating my own schedule allows me to be the family oriented person that I am, a daughter, a mother and a wife.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

When I look back to where I first started and saw my growth, I must say I am extremely proud of myself. There were so many challenges when I first started as a makeup artist. No one wanted to give the new girl a chance, not because I wasn’t good but because I hadn’t created a name for myself. I spent my time being the assistant to another makeup artist or the assistant’s assistant of that makeup artist. There were days where I doubted myself on one day being able to hold my own. However, that didn’t stop me and I quickly learned that you have to start from the bottom in order to get to the top. Instead I motivated myself to push pass that hurdle of self doubt and learned everything possible from the most experienced makeup artist available.

I am a believer of the saying “Knowledge is Power.”  As a Pro Makeup Artist, I did not envision myself doing only beauty makeup. I believe as a “Pro” you should be capable of doing multiple talents. I took multiple certified classes and have worked alongside some of the best mentors in the industry to gain the knowledge and experience I have today. Now I offer makeup application to men and women in beauty, editorial, SFX, TV/Film, one on one sessions and more. Thus, I have expanded my knowledge photography, acrylic nails (Perfectly Nude Nails), and basic hair styles.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many places to visit and hangout at in Atlanta, how can you choose? For the little time I have been here, I have only managed to visit a few places. Some places that you can hangout at are the Botanical Gardens, Georgia Aquarium, Centennial Park, basketball games at the Statefarm Arena, Silver Spot Cinemas at the Braves Stadium, and any lounge with good food and live music. A few restaurants I have ate at are The Sun Dial, Nan Thai Fine Dining, Rays on the River, South City Kitchen, Hal’s Steakhouse, and Tuk Tuk Food Loft just to name a few. One more thing, you must always end a trip or weekend of fun with a self-care day at the Spa.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have had so many people encouraging me from the very beginning, and I appreciate everyone’s support. The saying is true, it really does take village to raise a child, however this child has matured to an adult from the support and encouragement received. Therefore special special shout outs to Mr. and Mrs. Mosby at the Gwynnis Mosby Makeup Artist Training Center, the Basically Beautiful Team, Jay Barnes Photography LLC, and my family and close friends who are still to this very day pushing me to be the best version of myself.
