Meet Becky Vocaire | Founder + Principal of Studio Vocaire Interior Design

We had the good fortune of connecting with Becky Vocaire and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Becky, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had very young kids at home and a husband that traveled a lot. But still, I wanted something I could call my own and keep an identity of my own. I had worked commercially in architecture firms for the start of my interior design career and hadn’t worked residentially before. It was a bit of a learning curve. I had a lot of construction experience but procurement was a bit new to me. I self taught myself a lot in the early years but I think that largest learning curve was the business ownership side!
Looking back it was all worth it. To this day, I love the flexibility I have even as my kids are more independent.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Some designers have a defined style/look. I find it fascinating to learn about my clients and create spaces that are reflective of them. It is their home, after all.
That philosophy stems from my commercial work early in my career where I would program and space plan for large corporations and figure out how all the departments worked together as well as create work environments to help the individual department work optimally. I love space planning for families, right down to what drawer they want their hairdryer in, marrying function and aesthetics. Fostering an intuitive ease of use and communication and privacy within the household. Having also spent some time as a pastry chef and continuing to cook and bake personally, kitchen design comes so naturally.
What didn’t come as easily – building and operating a business – was the biggest challenge. I hired a business coach, bookkeeper, accountant. Listened to many business podcasts, spoke with other designers. Learning you aren’t alone and don’t have to do it alone. Surround yourself with a team that fills in those weaknesses!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Atlanta. Each neighborhood and area have individual personalities. I live in Decatur so a day around the area – doughnuts at Revolution, walking into downtown Decatur, shopping at the local stores like Trov, Squash Blossom eating at Taqueria del Sol. Another day around Ponce City Market and the Beltline – drinks at Midnight on top of the Forth Hotel for an amazing view of the city. Depending on the season, seeing a Braves/Falcons/ATL United game and some live music is always a fun addition to the trip.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and friends. I love my girls see me as a business owner and what I can achieve. My husband has been very supportive throughout this process and some of my lovely friends who were some of my first clients.
