We had the good fortune of connecting with Becca Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Becca, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Born and Raised in Shreveport, LA; where I was raised by my mom, a single mother with her own flourishing business as a cosmetologist. I’ve spent my entire life in a salon watching people get completely transformed and enjoying the luxury of beauty. My moms clients would walk out looking and feeling so confident, and like clockwork they’d be back to in two weeks ready to laugh, have a good time, and get their hair done. She has built so much for my family and her life and she allowed me to be creative and have my own mind. I was very timid and she knew that, so dancing and music was an extremely important part of my life it made me feel big in such a small world. Doing my makeup before every competition, performance, show, when I added makeup to match the theme of whatever number it was, I would get so excited to add color and the whole costume would
come to life and everyone enjoys it. I’ve always had a love for science as well and with school I learned to do research and collect data on different studies. So I’ll be returning back to school to get my MS in Cosmetic Science and becoming a Cosmetic Chemist

It truly makes me who I am, I march at the beat of my own drum and I enjoy working with my hands and I don’t mind if I get a little paint everywhere. I am learning to be unapologetic and with knowing that sometimes you just have to improvise a little to make it to where you need to go.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an editorial kind of girlie for sure. I looovvvvvve the theatrics when it comes to beauty from the Behind the Scenes to the finished look/portrait. whatever it may be and watching a look go from nothing to beautiful. I bring ideas to life and have a humongous imagination and love for art. I love skin and the way it looks and its texture. I want makeup to be a thing that my clients want, but not need. And, that is what sets me a part from others. My genuine ability to listen, assess, educate & simplify. In a way at the beginning my clients would look in the mirror and be so confused at first, but paying close attention to everything I did. At the reveal in which they would ask so many questions in shock because they had never watched anyone do or explain makeup the way I did. and how can they do it at home if they CAN’T get to me because they want to do this exact look? LOL A lot of artists are in the industry to make a quick buck. We are getting to the money yes, but most aren’t teaching to their clients needs like: how to properly take off their makeup, how to better prep for next time, or help with any skincare concerns that they may have. Now I’m not a Dr. or an Esthetician, but I’ve been equipped with the resources to know about makeup and skin through studies I’ve read, books of information, even understanding and knowing my own skin. So when they come back in their skin is refreshed and repaired, while looking and feeling good before and after. I enjoy the care I give my clients it should be a luxury, so I give that every time.

I think about things differently when it comes to my brand. I’m particular on who my clients are because I enjoy a genuine clientele; kind of like my moms in her salon. When moving to Atlanta during the pandemic at a very random and unplanned time. I was fresh here and didn’t know a soul in the beauty industry that could give me some insight. I took a class with Marquis Ward to brush up on a few skills and it was an amazing experience. I’ll never forget. It has helped me so much, in ways that has made my artistry more fluid, but it hasn’t been an easy journey in these past few years. While teaching still, I joined the Sephora family and it was so much fun. I always wanted to work there and I was hired. Becoming one of the top key holders in less than 2 years of joining completely taking a hit financially after moving, quitting teaching and officially joining Sephora (talk about a risk) . A lot of sacrifice, hard-work, faith, studying/practicing, long talks with God, selfish acts for my own sanity, not allowing fear or anxiety to hold me back and giving myself grace. Grace is what many people lack so I really tapped into that. Sometimes not going on trips with friends or family because I knew I had to go slay a face and get this money, but also making my clients happy too which I adore so much. I learned to speak up and be who I truly was flaws and all. I am extremely hard on myself, but who isn’t?

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have a notes document full of all the activities and places to go in town haha! I take my best friends to the best spots in ATL, being a Louisiana girl we love to dance, sing, eat, and drink…while walking. Midtown and Westside of Atlanta have some of the best places and service in the city. The High Museum, Aquarium, hopefully a concert or music event is happening (that’s some of the reason I moved here) hahaha!! The Drawbar is my favorite place with the most beautiful view of the ATL skyline. Going to different bars to see who has the best Espresso Martinis, still figuring that out now! Walking and grubbing down on the Beltline or at the Works. Definitely Bon Ton ATL, and Hawkers are some of of my favorite places to take my friends especially those who want to try SluttyVegan. I go places that I know will for sure be a great time. Pasha Restaurant and Bar, Two Urban Licks or Rocksteady at night time for good music, food, and dancing to help burn those calories off. While finishing off with Jeni’s Ice Cream they enjoy the late night experience every time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To my mom and big sister Necie A. who I look up to so much and that push me like no other even when I don’t feel like it (which happens a lot) . Celena for always being the best and patient person and answering every question I’ve ever had for her with a smile and grace. Nikki my Caribbean sis for always having my back, throwing my name at anyone who would listen. Marquis Ward; who is an amazing International Makeup Artist, with his authenticity and transparency he did not gatekeep whatsoever and spoke the truth that opened my eyes to an even bigger world of beauty. Staying resilient is needed and he showed that. So shoutout to you ya’ll amongst many many others. yuh!
