We had the good fortune of connecting with Becca Twiggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Becca, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
There wasn’t one singular moment where I decided to pursue a creative career, the arts were always just something I wanted to be in my life. I was involved with theatre growing up, and as I’ve gotten older, I’ve grown more in love with writing and empowering others to tell their own story in the best way possible.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I started writing scripts when I was in high school, and I continued that development throughout college. Early on, I had to create my own opportunities to share my work, like many up-and-coming artists do. I started a one-act play showcase in college, I hosted readings, and submitted to festivals, because even though I had my insecurities, I knew I wanted to write, and to share stories with others.
A lot of my success right now comes from knowing the right people, being eager to do anything and everything, and a lot of luck!

The work I’m most excited about right now is the future of my play ” The Pros and Cons of Killing Your Cult Leader”. It was a commissioned 90-minute script I did for The Weird Sisters Theatre Project that had sold-out runs at both Aurora Theatre and The Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse. With some more tweaks, I think it could be an excellent play for college theatre departments and small regional theatres.
If you’re interested in producing “The Pros and Cons of Killing Your Cult Leader” or are interested in reading any of my other work, check my profile on New Play Exchange!

I feel so incredibly lucky to be this early in my writing career and already have opportunities for commissioned scripts. After self producing scripts throughout college and for festivals post-grad, it’s really great to see something I wrote reach a level of exposure and success that I wouldn’t have been able to do on my own!

I hope to continue building my brand as a writer who caters to weirdos, and anyone who supports women’s rights and women’s wrongs!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a big fan of chill vibes and activities, so I would definitely take them to my favorite coffee shops and hang out spots, like Dancing Goats, Banjo, and Java Lords.

I love getting a lot of movement in, so we’d probably go hiking at Stone Mountain or walk the belt line, and probably hit up Doll’s Head Trail.

There’s always amazing theatre and live entertainment happening, but I would make sure they’re visiting Atlanta when some of my favorite theatre festivals are going on – either Atlanta Fringe or SheATL. We love supporting new works!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jake West, Jaclyn Hofmann Faircloth, Dani Herd, Lucas Ryan, and Maggie Bridges. Thank you all for supporting me in whatever way you can.
