We had the good fortune of connecting with Austin Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Austin, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from New Orleans. One of the greatest cities of all time. My upbringing was like a good pot of gumbo because it had a little of everything. I grew up with scholars, hustlers, gangstas, athletes you name it. Having that diverse background played a huge role in my life. It’s all about the characters and perspective.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I run a Creative Label called “SLife Creative” and we are dedicated to creating media that tells our stories. As a black creative we always have to fight harder because we don’t collectively own anything. When you build a platform like Netflix, Hulu or say Disney + you will not only be creating a mound to pitch from you will be creating a legacy of stories that could generate some form of equity. Doing this isn’t easy but passion is. And this is a passion. The biggest challenge we’ve faced so far is finding the right partners and the right funding for our ideas. I’d say the biggest lesson I know and the most consistent thing I have is perseverance. I’m not afraid to try again every day. I want the world to know that if WE tell a story, WE sell a story. Our narrative is always OURS.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend is in town first things first, we hitting Tako Sushi because we gotta have some fried Asparagus. We prolly hit a first Friday and chill and relax @ a Jazz Show, peep the scene out. Saturday we def hitting the Rapids and the trails. Augusta has some amazing outside venues and we both Taurus so we on that. Sunday we def gonna hit First Watch for Brunch and then head out to Cork & Flame to eat some exquisite food and drink some good wine. That’s just the SLife basics. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother deserves every shout out. She gave me the raw game at a very young age. She supported every single dream I’ve had. I’ve had millions. She called me a bad singer when I was young. I took it personal
because I didn’t understand that she was used to Marvin Gaye and Teddy P. It helped drive me to become
better at it. She worked multiple jobs to support the one thing she always said. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING.
