We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets my children’s book art apart from others is my corporation with hip-hop culture. The characters in my books are kids, and they all love music and dance. I use hip-hop to create the fantasy worlds they travel to, and other imaginary characters are in tune with this type of music as well. It was a pretty fun process. I’m proud that it came together cohesively. Becoming a professional author wasn’t easy, but it was worth all the sweat and tears. There were many challenges, but I stayed clear of my goal by always believing in myself. I learned that I definitely couldn’t do everything alone. Having a solid support system is always helpful. I want the world to know that I genuinely love motivating children, and my brand represents keeping their dreams alive.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend visited ATL, I would start with a lovely rooftop brunch at 5Church Midtown. Then, we would do a little shopping at Atlantic Station. I love that area. It is so much to see and a ton of things going on. Afterward, we may grab a bite at Ponce City Market. There are many options there, and I know my friends would love that idea. Then later that night, we may find tickets on Eventbrite to see live music and just dance the night away.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my followers and fans of my children’s book series Makayla’s Blues. Without support, this dream of becoming an author would still be a dream. I’m thankful for everyone I have come across. It’s been an incredible journey.
