Meet Ashley Nesbit | Founder of H.M.F.H & Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Nesbit and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Taking risk! Me taking a risk to move to an entirely new state with zero family, taking a risk to retire from hair after 16 years while having a huge profitable clientele, was such a huge risk for me. When I thought there was more to life than just standing behind the chair, everyone thought i was crazy lol. So yes! Huge leaps of faith has most definitely contributed to my success and overall God!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Hi I’m Ashley Nesbit Founder of rebel hair care brand Healthy Muhf#@kin Hair, We exist to help women (with all hair types) prioritize healthy hair with cockiness, boldness, and positive affirmations.
I’ve always been a rebel. Someone that thought outside the box and wanted to do my own thing. Never wanted to blend in that’s probably why I stayed in trouble as a teen. My brand was created to change the narrative on what everyone thought natural hair should be. We believe self indulgence should be the focus, not hair types or numbers designed to keep us a slave to our self worth.
Recently, I was accepted into Amazon’s Black accelerator program! So this is what I’m most excited about right now. Being able to reach women of color all over the world!
My grandfather was one of the only black architects in Norfolk Virginia, he was the first entrepreneur i saw in my family. I always had a passion for hair , and I knew as a young girl I didn’t want to work for anyone. M grandparents wanted to send me to college, and i told them I can’t I want to enroll in hair school, and that’s where they sent me.
Starting off was extremely hard for me because i was still rebellious from my childhood-teenage years. I thought me graduating from high school and beauty school was all i needed to succeed and that was all the way wrong. At 23 years old i had two boys under the age of 2. living in a low income neighborhood, trying to make it week by week.
My vision for my boys, and the way I wanted to live kept me going. I knew I didn’t want to live like that forever. I had to step my game up mentally, and really ask myself..was i doing everything i could to grow? I wasn’t. I was giving up to early not realizing everything I went through was setting me up for success.
I want everyone to know that feeling in your heart you can’t get rid of, those dreams you keep having. is for a reason. God gave me vision early in my life and I refused to settle. My brand H.M.F.H has created a tight-knit community of hair
rebels who are excited about the revolution, and freeing themselves from people-pleasing and blending in. You deserve to live your life the way you want without others opinions.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of the most exciting things i love about Charlotte is the food scene! Along with me running my business I also am a foodie vlogger! If your’e looking for a date night weekend, South end is an amazing area! My favorite place is Stir. Downtown Fahrenheit is a rooftop bar & restaurant. Casual hang outs or turn up vibes , Stats (black owned) and Harolds.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank my family and close friends for always being so supportive through the ends and outs of my entrepreneurial journey. My God mother (rip) who introduced me to hair, my grandparents, best friend who let me experiment on her hair lol, and my husband for always being there for me.
