We had the good fortune of connecting with Ash Zhou and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ash, why did you pursue a creative career?

It’s fortunate to be able to do what you love, and it’s a blessing to be able to make money off of it and do a job that you are truly passionate about. When I’m outside “Film”,my emotions towards joy and sadness are quite muted. I don’t experience significant emotional highs or lows in everyday life. However, inside the world of “film”,I find myself deeply moved. The beauty of a perfect scene, a poignant performance, or a compelling narrative can bring me to tears. After getting involved in the film industry, it was the first time in my life that I felt “I want to do something.” Not because “I have to”, “I can’t if I don’t”, “I should”, but because “I want to do it. ”

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have co-founded WLab Innovation in Brooklyn New York, doing virtual production that utilized UE to craft immersive virtual backgrounds, combining LED screens with physical sets. More than a technological advancement, WLab is a mission to democratize advanced filmmaking technology, aiming to make what was once exclusive to a privileged few accessible to emerging artists. And when we first started, it was super difficult. It was just five of us took on different roles in fundraising and seeking venture capital. And in order to save labor costs, we assemble the LED screens ourselves.
We have always believed that the effort we put in is directly proportional to the rewards we receive. So by the middle of last year, we officially started our business. We collaborate with companies like Sony and B&H to create music videos and short films. Developing from an empty lot to having a large screen, expanding from a small team of 5 people to 30, and making our company known to the whole of New York and even beyond, has indeed been a very hard but happy journey.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

If it’s my best friend, I’ll say we’re staying home. Just kidding. I guess I will take my friend to Big Snow in Jersey City to experience snowboarding because I love that. And recently my friend Stefan introduced me to rock climbing, and I instantly fell in love with it, so I guess rock climbing has also become a must-do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s still a significant amount of room for improvement and much more for me to learn, but what truly fulfills me at this point in my life is the presence and support of my parents, friends, and my team. I consider myself lucky enough to have their unconditional support, and because I have the courage to grab that luck as well.
