We had the good fortune of connecting with Asé Selah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Asé, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my brand is when inspiration and emotion are reflected in my works.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It took some trial and errors to be where I am today. I am forever grateful for the process. It excites me to see when people are genuinely having an experience with my work. It makes me proud to have critiques respond that my work has its own voice. Having my own voice is extremely important to me. I never wanted to be compared to another artist. Yet alone be their shadow. I wanted my work to have its own uniqueness and feel. After studying compositions from the purist and fauvist era’s I feel in love with the thought process it takes to build bodies of work mixing both styles and techniques. A huge lesson and challenge I learned along the way us to always be true to yourself. Don’t create to satisfy the masses, create works that you are satisfied with and share it with the world. If you are creating for money you’ll never be truly satisfied. This mindset is what sort of made me appreciate being an artist and a business man. With balance I understand both sides of the spectrum. I enjoy what I do therefore it doesn’t feel like a job which allows me to not be hard on myself when it comes to pricing and sales. I love putting things together which is what my Curated Gallery brand is all about. “Carefully chosen, thoughtfully organized and presented.” When people see my brand I want them to feel exclusive and to understand that it is universal for all.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A recent favorite of mine would be the illuminarium in Atlanta. It has a perfect blend of art food and music. For food rock steady has amazing Caribbean dishes with basquiat influenced artwork on the walls. Upstairs they have a nice house music lounge. Midtown has a surplus of art walks and popups.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a shout out to ArtsHuntsville and the MidCity district for all their support. A big shout out to my community for embracing my work gracefully. A special shout out to Jordan Wilson for her close role in assistance and critiques in my artist development process. I can’t forget about all of my supporters who’ve purchased from my brand I wouldn’t be where I am today without your appreciation of my work.
