We had the good fortune of connecting with April Broughton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi April, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was finding another stream of income that was going to always be relevant and didn’t require too much risk. See all my life growing up I was a hustler, I wanted to break free from the street life without loosing, my niche for making a profit .
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well my ambition to start my business More and Better Seafood and Soulfood LLC came about after I got laid off from a management position that I really enjoyed. Nipsey Hussle got killed around this time and after reading his story and quotes of having ownership it inspired me to go harder. I vowed to never be in the position to be let go again so I started working for myself. I fell back on my roots knowing that cooking was a hobby that I enjoyed doing with passion, I woke up one day and drew my logo that you all see currently.
In my city the average person selling foods plate specials where pretty basic, so I created a menu that gave you the same Geechee flavors but give a MORE elegant vibe at a BETTER price . Some of my menu items included Crab Stuffed Salmon, Ribeye Steak & Lobster Tails, as well as specials to include seared scallops and fried shrimp. On average I would sell 15-20 plates a night, with my business catching buzz through the city, I went full time and started selling breakfast plates. My chicken n waffles and shrimp & grits with crab cakes was slanggin !
In fall 2020 I moved to Atlanta,GA where The most challenging part of this was honestly believing in myself and not giving up on my dreams. I had to start adapting to my new environment. One thing about Atlanta is they definitely show love to hustlers, so I kept on hustling! I transitioned from just selling plates to private chef and catering. I bombarded my way through the city by attending underground pop ups and advertising my butt off via Instagram. Special S/O to GasStation ATL & OurBar they where some of the first venues to help me put my foot in the door!
Some lessons that I’ve learned is leave room for mistakes, but never keep repeating them. Also, keep your mind open and vision clear cause when you do that you have a ray of possibility ahead of you to innovate. Time don’t stop for nobody, So don’t ever regret meeting new people and letting some old ones go! I’ve met a lot of great people that have connected and supported me more than person I’ve know for years! Step outside of they’re vision of you to become a better you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve found myself day drinking at The Hive for brunch and at night vibing at Harolds Chicken n Icebar. Some fun things to do around Atlanta also includes Ponce City Market, the Coney Island theme with the city roof top is definitely the move along with any other bar with good ass food and music. So of them most exciting places to check out has to be along the Beltline, the new artwork that pops up on a daily is very intriguing.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to first give a shoutout to my mother she has taught me to walk with a purpose and to always try to do things right! Also if she wasn’t in the kitchen whipping up that good food and taking me grocery shopping with her on Saturday mornings I would of never been inspired to cook. The steps of getting a good meal on the tables & her working hard to provide and standing over the stove all to make sure we ate all stuck with me, and I appreciate her for that.
Second S/o goes to my fiancé for being my backbone . She has push me to step out on faith and do what I love , and she encourages me daily to challenge myself to reach my full potential.
Third , big s/o to my hometown city Charleston,SC , for being my motivation to do more, and become better not only for myself but the longevity of those around me.
