We had the good fortune of connecting with Antara Ghosh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Antara, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
The choice of changing careers and pursuing a master’s education outside my home country. I have a Bachelor’s in Product design, which is a creative field but very different from visual communication such as motion graphics. I always had a good visual understanding but pursuing a career in another country has to be the most difficult step. It is common for many to study abroad, but being the first in my family is a big deal and having no one with experience to guide me has been very scary. Leaving the comfort of home when with no one known in a foreign place, has to be the scariest and most bizarre experience many go through. For me, it is all possible because of my parent’s constant support and confidence. I’m still in the process but I’m happy my past self made the choice. I have grown a lot and that one decision has made me more confident in taking some more risks.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My motion graphics journey began 3 years ago with little to no knowledge but that’s the nice part about being student you get to try out various things. It took a lot of experimenting and trial and error to build the style and portfolio I have now. As a motion designer, I am focusing on creating style frames and conceptualisation. Over this time, I have built a love for colours and textures and creating organic visuals and I aim to tell stories with these. Story and content is an integral part of the visual communication, it creates a lasting impression if the story is conveyed in equal terms with amazing visuals. I also enjoy animating but the love-hate relationship is strong, I have a long way to go as animator and keep learning. My work is described by others as pretty or beautiful, that gives me a lot of confidence. But when it comes to using these skills in the industry, there many other factors that are equally important. During my internship at Framestore, I realised how the industry is ever-changing with various skills and software that designers are expected or can learn to be more adaptive. That’s a plus because it’s fun for me as I enjoy exploring different styles, which I have found to be an advantage while I was interning. where I could get into various projects.
With such a short period for my Master’s, I pushed a lot to try different skills and find the ones I enjoy and lack in, but the Motion Media dept. at SCAD is super supportive and inspiring. It is easier to get lost in your own creative world but the motion graphics industry is all about teamwork and is smaller than it seems. In the end, it’s not a competition, we all just want to create amazing stuff. Asking for help is hard but makes things easier, and as I graduate from SCAD I’m eagerly looking forward to working with all my friends and peers and seeing what each of us creates.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Savannah is a pleasant place to visit for a trip, like a getaway from busy life. The very first place on my list, will be River Street, we would grab a gelato from the River Street Sweets and walk along it till the end part and spend the evening at Forsyth Park. Walking around the downtown area, is the best way to look at local shops and cafes and one of them will be my fav bookstore, E Shaver. I would definitely do a tiny ghost tour and show some of the ‘haunted’ houses around. Food is important, Foxy’s, Flying Monk, Betty’s and Greentruck are a must and late-night Leopold’s ice cream when the queue is short. Being from SCAD, I would definitely, take them to the SCAD story and SCAD museum and if the weather is pleasant I would take them to Tybee beach.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people who help me become who I am and reach where I am. I want to dedicate this with my Maa for the constant and unconditional love and support and I definitely want to give a shoutout to everyone I have interacted with and befriended at SCAD, giving me small encouragement to big helping hands.
