We had the good fortune of connecting with Anissa Hodge and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anissa, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Pursuing higher education. I was the first in my family to step outside of the box in terms of leaving home and going away for both my undergrad and graduate educational experience. These decisions enabled me to not only attain degrees, but to also re-shift my perspective on life, education, finances, social interaction, etc. This has contributed to my success because ultimately I was able to apply these experiences to establishing my own brand and business.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Candle maker also known as a Chandler. I hand pour and customize scents using essential oils and aromatherapy individualized to the customers liking. I have over 15 scents at this time. Each of my vessels are refillable and come equip with a mental health quote to truly lighten your day.

There is a variety and diverse set of candle makers. Autumn Nirvana is esoteric because we are focused on changing the stigmas surrounding mental health one candle at a time. Our brand is relatively new, therefore we are still focused on marketing and visibility.
This has been a challenge due to financial resources and grant access.

I got to where I am today business wise due perseverance and not giving up when the road got rough. I like for my candles to stand-out, I spend a lot of time focusing on customization and perfecting my scents. I have learned that customers value dedication and consistency of product.

I want the world to know that Autumn Nirvana Aromatherapy Candle Co. is a brand focused on improving your mood and mental health through vibrant home decor. Our vibrant, and highly fragrant scents are sure to empower, alleviate and provide serenity to aid in finding your true nirvana.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta is a vibe. I haven’t been out much since moving here 3 years ago. However, if I had a friend visiting the area I would first take them to Ponce City Market. This was one of the first places I visited and enjoyed, there is a wide variety of activities to enjoy and eclectic food to choose from.

Following this, I would possibly go for a stroll along the belt line to burn off the calories we enjoyed. This would be before we go to Fat Tuesday’s in Truist to enjoy a frozen drink or baseball game.

Afterwards. night life is endless. We could find a lounge to enjoy or go to a cozy soul food establishment to enjoy a taste of the south.

A few of my favorite things to do and see here start with food, social events or a good self-care/ painting event.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My grandma Julia, at 78 years young, she’s a true pioneer. Her wisdom, love, and encouragement have motivated me throughout my lifetime.
