We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelina Postoev MD FACS. She is a triple-board certified general, trauma, and cosmetic surgeon in Atlanta, GA. She is a Co-founder of the IBI Healthcare Institute, Surgicare Arts and Aesthetics, a Clinical Professor of Surgery at Augusta University, the Founder of Ori-Or Skincare line, a motivator, a beauty enthusiast, and wife and a mother. We’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Postoev, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
We chose to run our business very differently than many in our field. We have a fabulous team of professionals and everyone in the practice is a key element of our success. We believe everyone plays an important role and we listen to their concerns and questions, we are receptive to their ideas. We have created an environment where every team member knows their contributions are important. We believe in them, they can see the passion that drives us, and they know that together we are helping patients become healthier and live more fulfilling lives. We are making a difference in the world, one patient at a time.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I became a surgeon and chose this career because I had a great desire to help others. As far back as I can remember, I have been wellness-minded. Both my mother and my big sister had some health issues that were related to their weight and their issues got worse after moving to the United States. This gave me the desire to not only make others well but help educate them on living a wellness-focused lifestyle.

My husband(who is also my business partner) and I focused on medical specialties that would help others and this is how IBI Healthcare Institute and its specialty divisions were born. The specialties that fall under the IBI Institue umbrella include weight loss, general surgery, bariatric surgery, and cosmetic surgery which have evolved into a solution-based, beginning-to-end, full-service type of wellness center.

Our practice is unique and sets us apart from others because we operate it out of a genuine concern for people and their overall health and well-being. We are pioneering a new way to practice medicine and wellness based on how we can best help each patient as an individual and we are not working for a big organization that is telling us what we have to do or how we have to do it. We can focus on what is best for the patient.

The IBI Healthcare team is comprised of compassionate and highly-skilled professionals that have the gift of making each patient understand how invested we are in their success. We treat each person that comes through the doors of any of our divisions like they are family. We are interested in what their concerns are, and what goals they have in mind, and then we make a plan to help them achieve them.

One of our main endeavors is to educate people about obesity, which is an epidemic in our country. There is so much misinformation floating around about obesity and weight loss and we feel providing accurate information and teaching lifestyle behavior can make a big difference in their lives and into the future.

The different divisions of the IBI Healthcare Institute work together to provide personalized patient care through a holistic approach. IBI’s advanced weight loss center can be a tremendous help to a person who has struggled with obesity for many years. They may also have other health issues that were created due to their weight. Once they lose a significant amount of weight, those health issues may go into remission and no longer cause symptoms.

Weight loss gets the patient’s health back on track and then the cosmetic surgery division (SurgiCare Arts, Inc) can help boost their self-esteem and self-confidence. Most patients who lose tremendous amounts of weight end up with loose saggy skin and even though they are physically feeling better and have more energy, they may be emotionally depressed or discouraged because they feel they have traded one problem for another. With the help of cosmetic surgery, we can address all that loose skin, define and contour those problem areas, and get their self-esteem back on track.

Getting to where we are now was not easy but I would say it was worth it. Years of medical school, and more years building a business, piece by piece, overcoming obstacles, having to back up, regroup, and persevere through it all put us in this place where we are able to help many people.

My biggest challenge was learning the “business aspect” of what we were trying to accomplish. As a surgeon, I understand and practice medicine, I know how to run a large trauma unit, how to best take care of a patient, etc but when it came to “running a business” (private practice) and all the elements that it came with, as well as finding work/personal life balance, was a challenge. We never gave up, we focused on our goal and kept doing the hard things. We continued trying different things until we found what worked. That is the key, never give up!

We are thrilled and excited about our ongoing expansion project, adding locations to provide services to even more individuals. I have also developed a natural skincare line (Ori-Or) that I am very proud of that is free from irritating additives, is safe for all skin types, and offers great results.

One of our core beliefs is that practicing the golden rule, helping others, demonstrating compassion, and giving back to the community are critical to the health of our nation. We started by partnering with other local organizations to provide medical treatment to patients that had no access to insurance or financial resources. (In some cases, this meant life-saving surgery) Then we started a non-profit to provide surgery to patients who would not be able to afford it otherwise. We desire to continue to grow it, changing lives, one patient at a time. Hopefully, these individuals will pay it forward, find their place in community outreach, and help make this world a better place.

What I would love the world to know is that a health and wellness-focused lifestyle will allow them to enjoy their life, not just manage their way through it. You cannot work all the time, taking care of everyone else but yourself or the stress of this unbalance can lead to serious health conditions. Obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, mental health issues, and stroke are all by-products of living an unbalanced lifestyle.

IBI Healthcare Institute is here to help teach people what this means to them on a personal level and then help them put a plan in place to achieve that balance. In the case of obesity, we take a holistic approach and do not only focus on diet and exercise but also on the other factors that created or are contributing to the patient’s health issues. We spend time teaching about true wellness (nutrition, stress management, etc) and also use modern medicine and surgery if necessary to help them reach their goals.

We are here to help people. The professionals at IBI Healthcare Institute are available to help individuals lead wellness-based lifestyles. Tackle obesity, boost self-esteem, remove physical pain through the use of modern medicine and improve their quality of life. We would welcome any of your readers to set up a consultation and see how we can best serve them.

Thank you for this opportunity!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love the Buckhead Village and Shops! I would definitely take them to one of my favorite boutiques alice + oliva to shop and then probably over to Phipps Plaza. We would dine at either Le Colonial or Gypsy Kitchen because I am sure they would enjoy either and then maybe spend some time at the High Museum of Art. That would be about a perfect girls’ day out!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to recognize the doctors and team of professionals that give their time, expertise, and talent and have contributed to the success of IBI Healthcare Institute. Without these amazing, caring, people we would not be able to make a difference in the lives of so many patients.
