We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelica Mackin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angelica, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?

Sure. I am from a small town called Kannapolis, North Carolina. I mean literally you can throw a ball from one side of the city and have someone else catch it from the other side. I was raised in a home full of remarkable women. My great-grandmother, mother, and grandmother all took a part in my upbringing. Listen, I was brought up in a Fire Baptized Holiness church home setting. The rules were very STRICT! It was a must to hold yourself up as a classy lady. I mean no pants were allowed, no earrings, no tattoos, no NOTHING! I just basically wore long flowing dresses, pretty blouses, skirts, kitty heels, and a beautiful smile lol. My great-grandmother was the owner/pastor of the church so I guess you can say I am a preacher’s kid. My schedule went something like this, Wednesday was bible study, Thursday was a mini break, Friday was choir rehearsal, Saturday was the hotdog sale or convention, Sunday was regular 1st, 2nd, & 3rd church service lol.

That’s one thing about my great grandmother I remember. She guided me in the right direction when it came to knowing the most highest. My mother was always encouraging me to seek education. She PROMISED that with enough knowledge, and hard work, I could achieve all dreams and aspirations. My mother provided the BEST care for me, and it wasn’t anything I couldn’t get from her if my grades were average or above. I don’t know how she did it being a single mother. However, now that I’m older I UNDERSTAND & RESPECT her strength! On the other hand, grandma Jean (my mom’s mother) was off the complete chain! She was a wonderful woman with sassiness about herself. She did whatever she wanted FREELY! She was very outspoken and took many risks. She often did not like to hear the words NO! My grandmother was the life of the party and fear had no room when it came to this woman. She was such a vibrant soul rocking crazy yet cool colorful hair, dressing to impress, and keeping a slay with the manicure & pedicure. My grandmother was my fire, and I was her cold, meaning I basically kept her calm lol. I can still hear her say,” Moo, I don’t care what you want to do in life grandma got yo back! Stay FOCUSED baby, you can do it! GRIND!”. One of her favorite quotes was “self-preservation is the first key of law”.

Okay. It’s confession time. I must say after reading all that good stuff I was NO angel. I was a hard headed kid lol! I became pregnant with my first son and miscarried at the tender age of 14 yrs. old. I ran away from home at 16 yrs. old as well. Sheesh! This is where you can consider “Preacher kid syndrome” activated! It got better! No. Seriously, I got better lol. These 3 ladies impacted my upbringing significantly. I learned how to give the most highest praise. My religion has always been at the top of my list; I am honored to know that everything currently taking place in my life is because God did it for me!

I am a woman of class who takes much pride when presenting herself. I have the willpower including determination to seek knowledge. I remain teachable, coachable, and trainable to soak up as much information as possible. I understand with dedication I can get far but I must be disciplined as well. Finally, I must continue living care-free, meaning that “everyone will not like what I’m doing but it’s my vision not theirs”. I am NOT afraid to accept challenges and take risks. I strongly believe that “a GREAT entrepreneur is one who does NOT fear failure”. When I walk into a room, I walk with a purpose, I walk straight in so that I can own it!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I am the founder of Defined Curves Lingerie LLC established in 2019. I handle all the decision making for this brand and more. I would say being the CEO of a brand that caters to women and men is phenomenal. I strive to promote self- love, self-care, and self-healing all while feeling and looking sexy. I am so proud of having the opportunity to be able to spread a positive message on such great platforms. I take pride in being the confidence booster in someone’s life. Making people’s day just confirms that I am on a genuine path in the correct direction! To be where I am today has taken an enormous amount of work. I’m talking about day in and day out while getting little to NO sleep. I have taken a host of continued education classes about business. I even accepted prior sales/ marketing positions to assist with learning different strategies/ techniques.

The journey to success hasn’t been easy. In fact, if it was, I wouldn’t have wanted it! “Anything worth having is worth working hard for.” My biggest challenge in the beginning was being able to stay consistent. I had to deal with all that life threw my way and create a balance for business too. I did this by prioritizing my goals, placing everything in order from start to finish. I have learned many lessons along the way. One lesson would be not stopping when things get rough, keeping my head up with a smile on my face. Also, not worrying about what others think or say about my progress. “Slow and steady is better than no motion at all.” I found out that not everyone will support your vision, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t paying attention. I want the world to know the message behind my brand! I developed PTSD & anxiety from losing two of my children during their births. I gained so much weight from emotional stress eating, and depression that I couldn’t even stand to look at myself in the mirror anymore. I became extremely insecure about my body and the way I felt inside. I am glad to say that I NO longer suffer from those diagnosis and I’ve learned that mental health is real. I’ve allowed myself healing time and most importantly started loving me again. My brand is about teaching individuals that embracing who you are is imperative despite what you wear. I recently started “Talk About It Tuesday” a podcast on our YouTube channel for subscribers and other viewers to watch. I often share my story and provide different tips about steps I took to fall in love with myself.

I encourage accepting your flaws. Defined Curves Lingerie wants everyone to know that you are enough NO MATTER what! My brand ship’s luxurious lingerie garments throughout various locations within the United States. Trust me when I say that Defined Curves Lingerie is growing fast as we acknowledge our plus sized/ LGBTQ community.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my bestie for brunch to “The Hive Buckhead”. Next, for lunch we would have to visit one of my favorite spots “Slutty Vegan”. Yass honey! I would say for dinner it’s giving Paschal’s. I absolutely love their drinks, and especially those collard greens. So, if we wanted a little night festivity, we would most definitely have to hit up Cru Lounge just for a laid-back vibe, hookah, and more drinks! I will get an urge to shop, so with that said Phipps Plaza is the place for me. I love that mall! I am not originally from Atlanta, GA but it is one of my favorite states.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out God, my mother, big sister Kenya Tyler, some family members, and a host of entrepreneur friends. They support and show love from birth to photoshoots, purchasing online orders, and pop-up shops which can be hundreds of miles away. I appreciate them for that!
