We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelica Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angelica, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up, I always knew I’d end up doing something non traditional. I’d found myself drawn to the arts and was lucky enough to be surrounded by adults that were not only creative themselves, but supported my creative endeavors. I flew through endless hobbies as a child – mostly creative – but somehow always found myself with a camera in my hand, which set the groundwork for where I am today.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The main goal in my art is to create understanding and connection. If I’m taking portraits, my objective is to convey the pure essence of my subject’s soul through visual means. When it comes to film, it’s my job to transform and/or bring predetermined stories to life through my lens. All art tells a story, I just strive for the stories my art tells to unearth feelings that stick with my audience far past viewing my pieces.

It’d always felt right for me to be behind a camera but what got me to where I am today is persistence and consistency. Granted, it’s much easier said than done. As much as I’d like to say that I’m the most disciplined person, it truly is a constant challenge to choose creativity. Every decision you make matters, and everyday I’m learning to make the choices that align with my creative goals. Freelancing can be extremely discouraging, especially while working a job outside of it, but what drives me is knowing that I’m laying the foundation for the future where freelance work is my full time job.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It really depends on what type of vibe they’re looking for but for an easy start, Politan Row for a huge variety of food and drink choices (and plenty of vegan options for me). If we’re looking for a drink spot to catch up and chill; Elmyr, Church, El Malo (depending on the time) or any of the Edgewood bars for the most part. Naturally, you can’t expect to come to the hometown of Slutty Vegan with me and not eat there at least once. On the topic of vegan (friendly) food spots, we’d definitely be going to Tassilis, Life Bistro, and SoBa! Assuming this friend is a true tourist, I’d have to take them to the aquarium, the High Museum, the Botanical Garden, Piedmont Park, and Fernbank (or Fernbank After Dark). If this friend is looking to dance and get a taste of our nightlife, MJQ, El Malo and, if we’re lucky enough to be there when a good event is going on, Underground would all be on the list!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Both of my parents’ support for me in my creative journey has never faltered. They both had artistic minds and encouraged me to pursue my creative passions, either as a hobby or possible career path. Their unwavering support is something I’m extremely blessed to have and am immensely grateful for. Unfortunately my mother passed during my last semester of college – a very pivotal time in my life – and everything I do now is through and for her. My goal is to be the person that she saw as she was speaking life and positivity into me growing up.
