We had the good fortune of connecting with Ames Beckerman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ames, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Early in my career, I worked for a few larger companies as a Photographer. While there were many great aspects of working for someone, I wanted to be my own boss so I could have creative control, flexibility with my time, and the ability to work within the LGBTQ+ community which is a huge passion.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a photographer…but what I really like to say is “I am excellent with people, and I also happen to understand how to use a camera well”. I want to make my clients feel comfortable and have fun. I want them to leave the session feeling confident about themselves…even before they see the photos!

I want to work with the LGBTQ community that I am part of. I love all humans and family dynamics and I want to meet and work with everyone.

I never expected to become a photographer. I originally moved to NYC to start a career as a standup comic. That didn’t work out so well! I took a few classes at The Fashion Institute of Technology for fun around 2011, and then I just took off running.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ponce City Market- Chubbies, Yeah Buzzy, 5 Daughters Donuts

Shopping in Downtown Decatur- local art at Homegrown

Walk on the beltline

SummerHill- Hotdog Pete’s and Big Softie icecream

Drinks at The Eagle

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thank you to my husband, Jay, for all the support and encouragement! In March 2020, Covid and Love brought me to Atlanta after living in NYC for 13 years, and it was the best decision I have ever made. Jay has been by my side as I built Ames Studios from the ground up during the pandemic.
