We had the good fortune of connecting with Ameena Abdul-Hakeem and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ameena, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I knew I wanted my own business since I was in high school. I exercised my entrepreneurial spirit in college by making dresses for friends and family. After graduation I applied to countless jobs but received no offers. I then took it upon myself to create the opportunity I knew I deserved. I love that I can design what I want for clients who value my work and support my journey.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I founded Ameena Abdul Design, a custom design and tailoring service. I also recently launched a new brand MEENA Loungerie. As an independent designer, I have the flexibility to offer a wide range of clothing such as suits, dresses, outerwear, and lingerie, all ethically produced here in Atlanta. I provide a one-on-one luxury experience that my clients really appreciate. I created loungerie, which is loungewear garments that have the aesthetic and appeal of lingerie. I have never seen anything quite like my loungerie on the market and I’m proud of myself for building this brand in the mist of the corona virus pandemic.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ameena Abdul Design of course! Come visit my studio in downtown Atlanta for a custom design consultation or shop from my rack. If you’re into art like I am, visit the High Museum and SCAD Fash Museum of Fashion and Film. For beautiful drinks, tapas, and Instagram worthy photos, check out the Garden Room. I also suggest trying out black-owned restaurants if you can. There’s a lot of new ones I’m trying as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, all praise to the Most High. I also want to give a special shoutout to my mother Denise, who recognized my artistic talents at a young age and was the inspiration behind my first collection.
