We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amanda, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
To be honest becoming a Self-Taught Bartender was a risk for me, Purple Kissez Kreationz started as a bakery and six months in, I attended a pop up shop and I saw a mobile bar and I decided I wanted to provide my customers with desserts and cocktails. I didn’t drink and didn’t know how to make a cocktail but fast forward now: I have a very successful mobile mix bar, that carry cocktails, desserts, and cannabis, I have taught over 20 other amazing women how to be bartender, being invited to bartend at the hottest spots all over the United States. ALL from taking that big risk early in my career over 6 years ago! I encourage all entrepreneurs to take risks but make sure they are calculated risks. When you take a risk and it’s successful, you will end up with a higher reward.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Purple Kissez Kreationz serve cocktails, desserts, and cannabis and because we are a one stop shop our clients love that about us! Along with being a one stop shop, my clients LOVE the experience I provide them with. My team and I are dedicated to making sure our client’s event is stress free and enjoyable which allows them to focus on making memories with their guests. You wouldn’t believe how many people give me compliments on my attitude as well the way my cocktails taste. So come with a great personality and experience/knowledge when it comes to making cocktails. In conclusion, at PKK, it’s more than just making great cocktails or any of the other services we offer, we go above and beyond to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience when you book us. Owning and operating a mobile mix service might sound like a dream gig: be your own boss, set your own hours, flex your creative muscles, etc.But these bars on wheels pack a lot more under the hood than we realize. As the owner when I started off, I had to wear all the hats: from bartender to promoter, from repairwoman to procurement manager, I had to create balance and I did that by making me a daily schedule that I still use. Then it was the logistics of the business: paperwork, licenses, inspections, etc was very costly but lucking with the paperwork, I only must update everything one to three years at a time. And lastly it was a challenge establishing a reputation! I had to work extra hard to cultivate and maintain relationships in the events industry that I just entered. It can take years for an events service provider to build up a steady stream of clients and even then, I had to continue to advertise to find new customers. I had it on lock with the desserts, but it was harder trying with the cocktails, I had to find the perfect balance by making them strong enough but good at the same time. And to overcome that was honestly just getting out in the community and showcasing my products.
The lessons you learn working as a bartender are powerful and helped me with the other services I offer. You learn about people, you learn about yourself, you learn about life, and you learn a set of skills that can take you around the world. So, whether you’re in this for the long haul, just getting started, or using it as a side gig while you work towards something else, here are some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from years of bartending.
1, To kick this list off, I thought I’d start with one of the more personal and life-changing lessons I’ve learned from bartending. Bartending teaches you confidence, especially if you experience any form of social anxiety.
2, People remember how you make them feel. This is one of those lessons that took me a lot longer to figure out than I care to admit. It’s also one of the most important lessons anyone can learn if they work in the service industry or with people in general. People remember how you make them feel, not what you say or what you do. That’s why this lesson is so important to learn because you don’t want to become the bartender who focuses exclusively on crafting the perfect cocktail. They don’t go very far in this industry … trust me, I’ve worked with them! Whenever you’re serving your guests or talking with people, you should focus on making them feel good. If you do, I guarantee you’ll do well in this world.
3. Being a bartender is, well, fun! One of the most memorable quotes I’ve ever read in a bartending book comes from Gary “Gaz” Regan in “The Joy of Mixology.” In it, he wrote, “Once you find a profession you enjoy, you’ll never have to work another day in your life.” Sometimes, I don’t think we bartenders realize how lucky we are. And sometimes it takes leaving the industry before coming back again to have this realization. Bartending is FUN! Seriously fun. And the opportunities and life we get to live because of it are incredible. Flexibility, freedom, job security, travel, socializing for a living, working with other great people, discovering our senses, and so much more. Bartending teaches us how to live better and how to be better. And I’m so grateful that I’ve been a part of it for so long.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Although I haven’t been in ATL for long, the traffic here is crazzzyy. But Downtown Atlanta. We will visit the Trap Museum and Aquarium, then it’s a must I take my best friend (Hey Danielle lol) to all the food spots. I love The Hive, Twisted Soul Cookhouse & Pours, Slutty Vegan, and The Beautiful Restaurant.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to all My BAR BABEZ. The world wouldn’t know much about Purple Kissez Kreationz, Amanda, or Kitty is it wasnt for my Family, Friends, and Supporters!
