We had the good fortune of connecting with Am Sentio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Am, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’m pursuing an artistic/creative career that’s been ongoing for as long as I discovered my gift, and love for art, but more descriptively, music. The passion that I possess in my art, and many others , is just one of the reasons why. Since I was young, I always wanted to be a singer, or artist when I “grew up”. When I was about 5 years old (I’m estimating because I could’ve been younger or slightly older), I’d sing this song by the Temptations called “I Wish It Would Rain”, my parents, but mainly my dad in this aspect, influenced me with so many types of songs and classics from the 70’s to 90’s R&b/Motown, that I’d eventually hear the song playing and try to mimic or sing along. I became more comfortable, and progressive with my vocals, I would sing anytime I’d hear a song I enjoyed that was being played. As a few years went by around 7 I believe, I’d sing around the ‘grownups’ (friends of my parents) , and then I began to make, and write my own song lyrics. I feel like I’m destined to be a part of the art that revolves around this world, because sometimes, maybe I can make a difference in this life, and spread that joy that can derive from arts. Art can, at times, provide a feeling that’s contagious.

The word “career” can seem life long, and be interpreted in many ways. Money might play a huge factor, but the drive, and joy that I receive within creating. and having a “career” I’d still create even if I never made a dime from it. The inspiration, craft and support, is what will always keep me invested with the need to accomplish my inner goals to evolve into my best artistic self. To say the least though, I feel that it’s always better to pursue a career that you love to do. The money might not be as good at the moment, but to me, it will come. We are all on a journey, and path that we coexist in individually, but occasionally connect to become one with how we can relate, and in a better way have a positive impact in the end. I just try to enjoy the creative process and my evolution, whether it be a career, or something I do for the rest of my life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is a form of expression that I use to help me acknowledge what I’m feeling or my perception of life and events at any moment in time. However, the comfort that I receive from creating , especially when I’m acknowledged by others cannot compare. Something that I feel sets me apart from others is how vulnerable I choose to display myself sometimes in my career.  With all of the criticism and separation in the world, maybe I can relate to someone who thinks no one is feeling the same. Another thing that separates me from others, is that I create what I’m feeling instead of going with the trends and waves of today’s music. I will continue to create even if there’s no one listening at the moment , so you’ll know that it’s real, and from my heart. Something else that sets me apart from other artists, is that to me, my only competition is myself. This society has made us competitive, but believe you can never be better than someone else because..you’re not them. You are your biggest critic. When you stop battling to be ” the best in the world” you have more room to evolve into your best self. I’m most proud of the diligence and determination I possess in my career. Day by day, from me releasing music, I feel myself getting more comfortable and better in my creative process. I’m excited for what’s to come and what else I can learn in this journey of mine. I got to where I am today because I never gave up. Despite who told me what I could or couldn’t do. I remained myself, because that’s the best way to stand out. I’m still not where I want to be in my career, but I’ve made more progress from when I first started. Being persistent isn’t the easiest thing though. Sometimes if we don’t get the results we want, it can become discouraging. Imagine working on something for hours just for everyone to ignore/doubt you? We’ve all experienced this situation at least once. Where would I be without this tenacity? A failure. You never fail until you accept defeat . Until you decide you can’t push forward anymore, you are still winning. I’ve come to know that whenever you experience failure, you can always try again, and it doesn’t have to be the end. No one can determine your destiny, except yourself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Some of my favorite spots that i’d bring a friend to check out in the city, consists of:

– The Skate parks (Historic Fourthward Skate Park) – If you skate in Atlanta you’ve been here at least once. It’s huge and goes along the beltline in the city. This park is one of my favorites not only because of how huge it is, but the atmosphere; It’s always live. Also the skaters, it’s hard to tell who’s pros or not, because there’s so much talent. Oh you don’t skate? That’s okay, just take a walk on the belt line but not late at night..

-Fellini’s Pizza- The best pan made pizza I’ve tried in the city comes from here, at a decent price.-Ponce city market- Everyone goes here, they have everything you can think of. It’s like a big mall but better with all types of food, antiques, clothing, and events

-Piedmont park- Another huge park that I go to sometimes to enjoy nature and the sun, and also take photos. Plus, they occasionally host events , so sometimes there’s a lot of people here.

-High Museum of Art- It could take a while before you’re ready to leave after entering. So many beautiful pieces and creativity, you’ll leave the building inspired more than ever. If you’re an artistic individual in Atlanta, this is like heaven for you .

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Everyone wants to be able to do it all on their own, however deep down, we all need the support, mentorship, love, and encouragement from others to help keep us going. I first dedicate this shoutout to my father for doing his best to reciprocate the things he’s learned about music (because he’s also an artist who inspires me), and has pushed me to be better and to always “feel” the music. There were times where I just wanted “to be a kid” and play video games. I’d sometimes get distracted from my purpose or goals as an artist, but he would always show me the bigger picture. I’d also shout out my brothers(MacArthur, Matthew, Maxwell, and Malachi), they have a huge impact on what I create today. Because we’re related, we share many of the same ideas and grasp within art. We were influenced by the same things growing up. Although we share many similarities, we still differentiate in our own way. They also are creators, and when we collaborate, we share our differences to create something that contains other elements to make something of our own. They also continuously help me realize my potential whenever I start to feel self doubt. I also would like to dedicate this to my music tech teacher from High School (Dr Costigan) for assisting me to realize my talents, teaching me how to create music more efficiently, and music theory. Last but not least, I’d also like to dedicate this to God, because he’s blessed me with this gift/talent and purpose on earth.
Some others id like to shoutout who placed a mark on my life in art and inspired me to keep creating are:
Charlie & Darius Walker
Lyric Maddox
Matthew Manoel
