We had the good fortune of connecting with Aly Masters and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aly, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business came from my entrepreneurial family. My father and brothers all started successful kayak and slingshot businesses, and my mother had her own practice as an obstetrician delivering babies. I had already created an online community of people who needed help taking care of their natural hair, and I knew how important this topic was, especially with our younger generation. I was sitting on my living room couch one evening and knew I had to do something to help others while living out my passion. I sat there brainstorming names for my business…and Biocurlz ended up coming to life after having dinner with a friend of mine who helped me nail down the right name. After the name was born…my mind went crazy coming up with what to do next and how I could truly make a difference! That was my main focus, how I could truly help others and make a difference. So I decided to focus on natural hair care that provides 1 on 1 mentorship and length retention products. I am able to help mentor people on their hair journey WHILE providing products that will nurture that journey.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Biocurlz is a curly/natural hair care brand that focuses on curls and coils yet welcomes ALL hair types! One thing that truly sets Biocurlz apart from others is that we focus on mentorship and catering to individuals 1 on 1 on how to take care of their hair and reach their specific hair goals. We do not just provide a hair product, we want our customers to feel heard, understood, and safe on their hair journey. We understand that not one product fits all because we all have different hair types, lifestyles, live in different climates, and have our own judgments on what we prefer to be put in our hair. Although hair is not what defines us, we understand just how important and fragile our hair is to us on a personal level. We believe hair runs deeper than products…we believe in nurturing the mental health side and inner parts of us in order to better understand and love our hair, especially in a world of strict beauty standards. I am most excited at the fact that we have sold out of our length retention treatment over seven times and currently working on a much larger batch! It is truly the best feeling to receive messages and reviews from people who are seeing a difference in their hair, and feel more confident in their hair journey! The most challenging aspects are the days where you need to continue to push when you hear crickets. Pushing harder on days where you do not see much activity is very difficult, but it 100% pays off when you remain consistent and use those types of days as fuel to keep pushing! I am currently getting my Masters Degree in Entrepreneurship & Innovation to build biocurlz to its fullest potential. I am determined to make a difference in this world, and to help guide and mentor others on their journey in entrepreneurship.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Although I am back and forth between South Carolina and Atlanta, I have fallen in love with the Atlanta and the night life! I would take friends to “The Roof” at Ponce City Market for some drinks and games, I really love that it is basically a mini carnival/fair on top of a roof in the city with a great view! I am not a big clubbing person, but I absolutely love Club 10 on 10th and Piedmont! One of my best-friends, Brandon took me and I had such a fun time! I would definitely want to do a picnic in the park type of vibe as well as the Georgia Aquarium because I love those types of things.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shout-out and dedicate this to:
My Mom and Dad- Anne and Bill Masters – They supported my dream without any hesitation and helped navigate my journey.
My fiancé – Nick Short – he is my right hand with running the business and bottling my products.
My Best Friend- Cara Knight who has supported me non stop and shares my products with others. She is consistent and truly believes in me.
