We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Allison, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
As an entrepreneur, a wife, and a mom, one thing that I have learned is that balance is a myth. I wish that I could say that I have mastered work life balance, but, the truth is, I don’t think any of us ever do. I think what’s more accurate is that life is full of different seasons in which our priorities will change. I recently shared on Instagram that for the first year of my daughter’s life, my whole world revolved around her. As a small business owner, my creativity and productivity took a major dip during that season, but it passed. There will be peaks and valleys to your productivity and creativity, and that’s OK.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kintsugi Candle Co., born out of my personal experience with a brain tumor, is devoted to honoring the beauty in the broken. Each item is adorned with a quote that speaks of perseverance and triumph to inspire each of us to celebrate our stories of resiliency and prioritize self-love through authenticity. Our candles are 100% soy wax for a clean, slow burn and are hand poured in the USA.
I experienced first hand how a fragrance can transform your outlook in an instant and make a bad day a little bit better, and that was something that I wanted to share with the world. I joined my newfound love for aromatherapy with my desire to help others honor the beauty in their brokenness and own their stories of resilience, and Kintsugi Candle Co. was born.
Kintsugi is the Japanese practice of repairing broken pottery with gold. My interpretation of kintsugi is that items are made more beautiful because of their cracks, and not in spite of them, and I feel that this is something that can be applied to people as well. Like broken pottery put back together with gold, we are made whole again in spite of our trials and tribulations and are more beautiful and unique having been broken. We use our platforms to encourage others to share their stories and own their truths and seek to be a beacon of light and hope through advocating for self-care, especially during these stressful times. Most recently, I’ve written a children’s book around these themes that I am super exciting to be releasing this spring.
As a small business owner and a creative, I have learned so many important lessons. The one that always sticks with me is that being a business owner is a marathon, not a sprint. Growth doesn’t always come overnight. Most of us do not come successful right away. It is truly a process and growing a brand requires both patience and faith.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is so much to see and do in and around the Atlanta area! I love both Krog Street Market and Ponce City Market and feel like they do a great job giving visitors a taste of the diversity of Atlanta and all that the city has to offer, not only in terms of restaurants, but also fun shops and outdoor areas. Jeni’s Ice Cream is a MUST VISIT and all of my friends who have come to Atlanta and gone rave about it for years to come. I’m a big spa girl, and I also love to take friends to Exhale at the Loews Hotel or the spa at the Four Seasons for a self-care day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My business was established after my experience with a brain tumor. I often share about all of the things that helped me during my recovery from brain tumor, but I don’t often mentioned the people that helped me. I would like to dedicate my shoutout to them. Each person who encouraged me to share my story and to use what I went through as a source of inspiration for others deserves recognition, and these people know who they are. Specifically, my mom, Cyndi, and my husband, DeQuan, were my rocks during that time in my life and are still my rocks now. I could not do what I do without their encouragement and support.
