We had the good fortune of connecting with Alison Shores and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alison, what do you attribute your success to?
Each month GIRLS CAN! CRATE shares the stories of incredible world-changing women with the next generation of world changers. We share about their determination, their grit, their perseverance, their ambition, and their ability to overcome some really big obstacles on their way to changing the world. This is the most important factor behind our success as a brand. It’s that we’re taking all of the lessons we’ve learned from these amazing women and applying them to our work in the good and the hard. We look to them and the legacy they’ve left, knowing that they’re cheering us on.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
GIRLS CAN! CRATE is a monthly toolkit that introduces fearless girls 5-10 years old to fearless women who’ve changed the world. We are the original girl empowerment subscription box.

GIRLS CAN! CRATE began in 2015 and was inspired by a conversation that Megan had with her then-5-year-old daughter. From there, Megan pitched her idea for a girl empowerment product to myself and Kristen and we jumped at the chance to tell the stories of women we never met in school. From around a dining room table, we began to plan and dream, and today, GIRLS CAN! CRATE is an award-winning, nationally recognized brand that serves to encourage, inspire, and uplift the next generation of scientists, makers, creators, and change agents.

None of the three of us has any formal business training. We have had to seek out mentors, resources, and lean into our own grit and determination to build our business from the ground up. Has it always been easy? Absolutely not. But, when they see the faces of their subscribers as they learn about women like Bessie Coleman or Junko Tabei, or Mary G. Ross then the challenges of owning a small business are worth it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to all of the women who’ve come before me and my partners at GIRLS CAN! CRATE and paved the way so that we can do what we do.
