Meet Alison Burns | Custom Cake Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alison Burns and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alison, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always kind of been a DIY-er and attempt to do all sorts of projects. When I had my twins (third and fourth children) I decided the corporate world just didn’t make sense anymore. So I thought I’d try my hand at decorating cakes and cupcakes. It ended up unlocking inner creativity (and a higher level patience) that I never knew I had.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I take pride in the level of detail that goes into my work. I have often gone above and beyond what a client has paid for, simply because the cake would look better with a certain detail. I just love creating pieces of art to display and coordinate well with a theme.
While I have no formal pastry training, I have learned many techniques from tutorials (thank you YouTube!) and good ole trial and error. One of the best lessons I’ve learned is that if a technique or decoration doesn’t turn out quite like I had planned, having the vision to quickly turn it into something different is all that’s needed.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
While I must be honest, I don’t go into the city extremely often (I’m an OTP girl), I do love anything with a rooftop bar, like Ponce City Market. Braves games are also a must.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family for putting up with all of my mess of a work station, cake tools and sprinkles everywhere, and my friends for giving a girl a chance with lots of fun orders. I’d like to thank my husband for giving me the push and support I needed to see this through. He’s supported so much, that he’s learning the ropes as well. Our hope is to open a bakery within a year or two.
