We had the good fortune of connecting with Alice Guzman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alice, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been a passionate storyteller from a young age so I knew it was something I needed to pursue as a career. I love being able to create stories out of nothing. From painting and drawing to written stories, films, and photography, I love using different mediums to create new worlds. I’ve always admired how other artists, storytellers, and filmmakers were able to entrance audiences to believe the story that they were telling, even for a short period of time. And I found myself wanting to do the same to others. I want to create stories that inspire and make audiences feel alive.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a conceptual artist and photographer and suspense filmmaker. I love creating concepts based on horror and folklore themes. I have an affinity for using the color red in almost all of my conceptual pieces because it gives me a sense of strength and power. In a way, I’ve been able to carve a path for myself as ‘the red queen’ and have created my own distinct style. I’m incredibly proud of myself for sticking with what I liked and what I wanted to create rather than sticking with what was mainstream and trending. I’ve always been very self-expressive and found that I was capable of expressing true feelings and stories through photography. It was difficult at first, trying to find my own footing and my own voice since I wasn’t exposed to the work that I now create. But looking at my inspirations and the message that I wanted to share, it all came together perfectly. My work may seem dark and scary at first glance, but at the end of the day, I create dark art in order to highlight fears or anxieties that we may all have, and face them head-on. My work is all about becoming a strong enough individual to overcome any adversities.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Back when I lived in Miami I would definitely show them around the design district in downtown Miami as well as the Wynwood area. Growing up and being able to visit there and attend art shows and gallery openings there, was a large source of my inspiration. Now, because of my recent move to Colorado, I definitely would take anyone with me to hike through the mountains and experience the beauty that comes with it. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Without my supportive friends and the community of photographers online I definitely wouldn’t have been able to get to where I am today. I’m grateful to my boyfriend, Hunter Welsh, who is also an incredible photographer and adventurer, for pushing me to go outside of my comfort zone to see and feel Mother Earth in ways I had never experienced before. As well as photographer and artist, Nona Limmen, who constantly inspires me as someone who also creates dark art.
